We went back at 3 weeks.

He wasn't worried at all because she was gaining but just wasn't quite there. Sure enough by 3 weeks she was fine.

@stargal: I have a toddler also and pumping was stressing me out. For the first weekend, I pumped after every feed bc I had help over night and people to play with my toddler and hold the baby. During the week I couldn't do everything - feed, pump, sleep, play with the older one - so I stopped pumping and I think my supply got better bc I was less stressed. Every 2 weekish, I feel like I "dip" a little, but I pump a few times, take fenugreek, eat oatmeal and supplement with formula as necessary and I feel like after a day or two, it doesn't seem to be an issue anymore.
I always offer the breast first and if it felt like a weak feed, I would pump after to be sure my breasts got the stimulation they needed to keep making milk. At 8 weeks I feel confident about my supply and I was NOT feeling that way at 5 or 6 weeks.

@BabyBruins: thank you! did supplementing with formula hurt your supply at all? I had low supply with my son (pump and nothing would come out to supplement with) and i gave up at the two week point....... so with this lo i expect that i will have low supply again but i really want to make it work!

I had to supplement with formula - DS wasn't back to birth weight until 6 weeks! It was so stressful!

We were already supplementing with formula, so we started supplementing with a high calorie recipe (24 cal/oz instead of the standard 20/oz). Our ped also recommended increasing the amount we gave my LOs. We were giving .5 oz after each feeding per the LC in the hospital and our dr recommend trying 1-1.5 and adjusting up or down from there.

@stargal: our ped recommended supplementing. I hadn't pumped enough, so we did formula but I would give him BM if I had it. We supplemented every feed for a week, then about half the feeds for another week and then only 3-5 feeds the whole week after that. Now at 8 weeks I don't supplement much, but will give an ounce or two of formula if I feel like he needs to be "topped off".
He was jumping growth curves after the first week of supplementing, so it worked for us. He went from about the 5th percentile to the 20th.

If you are/were breastfeeding and your baby was still not at his/her birthweight at 2 weeks, what did your pediatrician recommend?
