I'm happy to update that it worked! She napped horribly today and I was really nervous. She cried for a little but in the beginning, slept for 45 minutes, woke and cried for a little more, then slept the rest of the way and even slept while we brought her into the house. I got nervous with her sleeping in the car seat bc her head was at such an awkward angle so we tried to move her to the rock and play and she woke up, but it still went better than I could have expected. Thank god- it was a rough day.

@mrsbookworm: I ended up sitting in the back with her te whole time. A little awkward but whatever. I napped and poor Dh drove alone. Good man.

We ran through a drive thru to pick up dinner and while we were in line, I jumped out and got in the front. Luckily, he didn't wake up. I also put the Sleep Sheep in the back with him. If your LO sleeps with white noise, you might want to have something handy...

@mrsbookworm: how did you move to the front? I'm afraid to stop, open and close the doors. I have literally tried to figure out if I can climb into the front seat with the car going slow in a rest stop so we don't have to stop completely.

We've only been on one road trip, but going at bedtime worked for us and we have a LO who ALWAYS cries in the car. I sat in the back with him until he fell asleep (about 45 min) and then switched to the front. It was about a 3 1/2 hour drive. He slept the whole time.

@anewme: ooh that's so great to hear! 5 hours we will be there and in the house!

Oh and another question- if you somehow got super lucky and Lo stayed asleep when you brought her into the house in the car seat, would you leave her in the car seat or transfer to the crib? She doesn't usually STTN so it probably be only a few extra hours max.

DS is another terrible baby in the car seat. I dread
Going anywhere with him longer than 15 mins. When he was 6 months we left for a 10 hour drive. We left at
Bedtime and he was able to knock out for 5 hours. So definitely think bedtime is the way to go

E hates her car seat and even when she was young, she wouldn't sleep in it. It took her a long time to fall asleep at bed time in the car seat (30-45 minutes) compared to 5-10 in her crib. But she would eventually!

We always leave around 4am. We bring her infant seat into her room and put her in it in the dark and cover it, then carry her out. If she wakes, she goes back to sleep quickly and stays that way until the sun comes up, and at least we have a few hours under our belt by then. After that she screams  We're three for three on this approach for road trips.

LO doesn't like the car either. On both the to and return trips to see my parents this weekend, he didn't sleep much at all. When we got there, he was awake but tired. He got to be the center of attention at 9:30pm when both my parents were awake. He cozied up to my dad for snuggles with his lovey. On the way home, he slept for a half hour and was awake, but quiet the rest of the ride. The lack of sleep resulted him sleeping on Monday until almost 7:30am.

I vote bedtime. DS was never a big fan of the car, he would tolerate a few minutes and then start to cry. Now (20 mos) he is better, we can usually make 45 min-1 hour trips before he starts fussing. We were strict on his bedtime and naptimes and he was a good sleeper, so the couple of times we have been out of the house at those times he has managed to sleep in the car. I feel like for him, night sleep has always been more consistent than nap sleep so we would do better leaving around bedtime and doing his nighttime routine. He also dozes off in the car sometimes for naps if we miss naptime, so sometimes we do that intentionally when we have a longer trip like 2-3 hours but his naps in his carseat only end up being about 45 minutes or so.

Good luck. I'm always jealous about people who say their LO conks right out in the car. :)

Oh red lights are the devil! LO used to wake up all the time and start screaming. What worked for us was just doing lots more car rides. I know that doesn't help you out for this weekend but I think as she got older she just kind of accepted that she was in the car so may as well sleep. I agree with the white noise, it did help keep her asleep longer.

@hilsy85: oh she likes those rock a byes songs- we can listen to those, or I have a white noise app that we can blare (it sounds like we are driving through the ocean half the time!)

The other question is if I should sit in the back with her to sooth her, or hope she sleeps and I can sit in the front seat like an adult. In think start in the front so if she sleeps we are set and don't have to stop, but if she is screaming no harm done by stopping for me to get in the back.

yes! Lo HATES The car, but if we leave at his bedtime, after doing his normal routine, he will fall asleep. It also helps that we've found music he likes and just have it on repeat for the whole trip, lol.

@Foodnerd81: LO hated the car when younger and tolerates it fine now but longer trips are still a gamble. We've left 3 times at bed time, twice were perfect and the last one he was wide awake from 7-10, cried for an hour and fell asleep 20 minutes before we arrived. It was awful. Hope your LO surprises you and sleeps easily!

Would they sleep in the car if you left at bedtime?

We are making a 4 hour drive to visit family this weekend. Right now I'm thinking of leaving Friday night, doing our usual bedtime routine only putting her into the car seat instead of the RnP, so leaving around 8:30 and driving straight through. I'm even considering doing the end of her feeding in the car and just plopping right into the seat. But she doesn't love the car and usually doesn't fall asleep. Do you think bedtime will be better? We could also leave sat morning after she wakes up and eats but then it's just nap time and I am afraid she wouldn't sleep since it will be light out.

Any experience? I get so jealous when I hear people say how their babies just go right to sleep in the car :(

Good thing she's cute.
