we used to, because she'd wake up with gas pains screaming. As soon as we picked her up she'd burp a HUGE burp and go right back to sleep. Now that she sleeps on her side or tummy we don't.

it depends on your baby. some are really burpy and some are not. charlie and olive were very burpy and if we didn't burp them, they'd usually wake up a short while later anyway so might as well burp them.

DS usually burps on his own when I move him from cradle hold to on my shoulder so I can get up from our bed to put him in his; if he doesn't then I lightly pat his back on the way to his bed.

I always felt like if she needed to be burped she would tell me and seem uncomfortable, so I let her be. DH didn't know this and made the mistake once of burping her, so she woke up screaming then couldn't get her back to sleep, he had to come get me. Never again.

I would always burp her very gently and just a few pats on the back. Usually if she was asleep enough for me to move to put her down, burping her wouldn't wake her up. If she woke up during burping, she'd wake up during the transition to her bed anyway.

I usually burp her... my logic is that if she wakes up a little, she can practice falling asleep in her bed, rather that in my arms. Plus, she usually spits up if not burped and that wakes her up anyway.

ETA: However, if burping tended to totally wake her up (like changing her does), I'd probably skip it.
