@IRunForFun: we are at 14 months. He hasn't outgrown it but we had allergy testing done and it isn't an allergy. He still reacts to even a bite a cheese through breastmilk

Both of my kids had MSPI, and I was able to slowly re-introduce dairy into my diet around 10/11 months. Around a year they could both handle things like butter, and by 18 months they were both totally fine with all dairy (although we don't do milk in my house).

My youngest had issues with reflux as a baby. When we switched him to formula, he couldn't handle the regular ones, so we went with soy. It smelled horrible, but he gained and thrived. I asked my peds about cow's milk when he turned one. He didn't see a problem with it. LO #2's been on cow's milk since 14 months old and doing well. He's turning 2 next month and can drink 3 sippy cups of it a night when he gets home. No digestion issues either. I've used probiotics with him to help his tummy out which does help.

My son had a pretty severe dairy intolerance/MSPI. He did have the typical blood and mucus in stool, but he also had TERRIBLE reflux (like we were hospitalized 2x for it) which seemed to be significantly worse when I ate dairy, soy, nuts, basically anything. I went dairy free/soy free and eventually all top 8 allergen free and then, the Dr. Sears elimination diet when he was 4 months old (that's when you only eat turkey, sweet potatoes, zucchini, and pears for 2 weeks!).

Because of his severity, we saw a pediatric GI who recommended I not reintroduce dairy until he was a year old and we could do allergy testing. We saw an allergist, and we had blood testing and the skin scratch, both of which were negative. GI had me introduce dairy in my diet, and that went okay.

Then we did a dairy trial in the GI's office with monitoring in case of a reaction. They trialed him with Similac Sensitive formula in gradually increasing amounts. He did fine, so then at home we very slowly transitioned him from drinking breastmilk in a cup during the day, to drinking the Similac Sensitive formula.

Now, he's 19 months old and he's drinking lactose free whole milk, so he's definitely not allergic. His reflux is much better but not gone. He doesn't like cheese. He loves yogurt, but it seems like he can only eat a little - if he eats a whole baby yogurt, it really flares his reflux, so it seems to me he may still have a little sensitivity. BUT - no allergy!!

DD was MSPI, and also seemed to react to other legumes in my diet. I was able to add dairy back to my diet by around 8 months, soy and legumes a little later. She started dairy at 12 months and had no issues. Soy and legumes okay for her too now, although she gets a stomachache if she eats a lot. I was so worried, but in our case she seems to have outgrown everything

My oldest had a suspected dairy/soy sensitivity. I accidentally ate soy at 7 months with no issues. Since that turned out fine, his GI recommended trailing dairy with me. I ate a small amount of yogurt first, I think, and nothing happened and I was able to reintroduce dairy to my diet. By 9 months, my son was consuming all dairy with no reactions. We were lucky I think, but I'm also not 100% convinced MSPI was the cause of his symptoms.

I started giving stuff baked with dairy around 9 months, cheese and yogurt around 10, and tried milk at 12. He got horrible eczema on his feet. We tried again at 13 and powered through and by 15 months it was fine. This was under a GI docs supervision.

Both boys did and my first outgrew by six months. My second outgrew by 10 months. My first had insane amount of spit up, projectile like across the room spit up. Tons of colic and gas pain. My second had a terrible gas pains, but much less spit up, but he had bloody stools and terrible rash. Our gastroenterologist said there is not a connection between milk soy protein intolerance and dairy allergy, but just in case my ped. had LO tested. No allergy.

Both my kiddos were MSPI (side note: if you think your babe is dairy intolerant, also be on the lookout for sensitivity to soy...the cow milk protein and soy protein are very similarly structured so something like 60% of babies cross react to both) DS1 was able to have soy at 1 year and dairy by 18 mo. I'm currently nursing DS2 (9 mo) and just started eating soy/dairy again, but noticed when he eats it directly he has some reaction still.

I also slowly introduced dairy to DS1. First baked dairy, then yogurt, then cheese, then half coconut milk/half whole cow's milk and then gradually increased the ratios. He's 3 and eats dairy like he's making up for lost time!

It's really not that hard to avoid, once you're used to it. There are tons of resources out there for help!

@catlady: @littlejoy: We only talked briefly about testing because she's still so young, so we didn't discuss age for testing, but that's good to know, thanks!

@catlady: We got the same advice (no testing until 1). Until then, our doc recommended testing via elimination diets (for both me and baby).

@IRunForFun: Have you talked with your dr about the allergy testing? Just curious, as ours didn't recommend it until age 1 at minimum (at least not skin tests, which is what we got).

@littlejoy: That's what made me suspect sensitivity too - we gave her some milk based formula and she had green, mucousy poop and a rash on her face. I'm fine with eating dairy alternatives myself while nursing and with giving her alternatives if she doesn't outgrow it, but we are definitely not a vegan family, so I'd love to be able to include dairy if I can.

@catlady: Interesting! I will probably do allergy testing around when we start solids if I can.

@JoyfulKiwi: I miss cheese SO much! I've been dairy free for over a month. I don't think she's got a severe intolerance as she's never had blood in her diapers. Just the mucus and facial breakouts. I'm hoping she outgrows it!

@IRunForFun: both my kiddos had dairy sensitivity as infants. My son was very low level (I still ate cheese, butter, baked milk products) and when I introduced cows milk to him at year he was fine. My daughter was more sensitive. She had blood in her stools and I had to completely eliminate all forms of dairy. Her pediatrician said to re-introduce at 6-8 months, but I was chicken and waited until 11 months and she was also perfectly fine.
Diary-free was hard to start for sure, but after a few weeks it got easier and I became used to it (except for the cheese - I always missed cheese!)

I'm not sure when she outgrew it but I re-introduced dairy into my diet around 14 months and she was fine (she was only nursing 2x per day at that point though), and we gave it to her directly within a month or two. We did get allergy testing for her due to some suspected reactions to other foods, but she tested negative for everything. I trialed it back into my own diet using a general strategy of baked dairy first, then small amounts of yogurt, then cheese, then ice cream. At the time, our pediatrician was no longer testing her diapers for blood, so we just watched for any reaction but we didn't see any.

I actually just went through the trialing part somewhat again with DS, as I did a dairy/soy elimination preemptively while pregnant with him and then re-introduced slowly when he was around 2 months. I used the same order of things and we haven't seen any issues. Our pediatrician has offered not to test him at all though unless we suspect he has an issue because with DD, even after I eliminated dairy and a whole slew of other things, she continued to test positive for blood in her diapers, which meant that I had to stay on the elimination diet. I suspect she may have outgrown any issue far earlier than when we actually re-introduced but we didn't want to take any chances due to the fact that it still seemed like she was reacting to something. We never really figured out what it was though.

We had to supplement LO starting at 5 weeks ... we quickly realized she had a dairy sensitivity/allergy (blood in stool, body rash, bloody rash under hair). It was horrible.

I completely cut out dairy from my diet, and switched to a soy formula for supplementation.

Personally, I had been struggling with the ethics of consuming dairy (was already vegetarian), so I went vegan at that point. We've raised her on a vegan diet since, and she's super healthy. She's accidentally been exposed to dairy at school (yogurt), and she almost immediately broke out in a rash ... this was at 1.75 years old.

I have friends who tested at 1 year (still sensitive) and at 2 ... at 2, it seemed like the dairy issues had passed.

FWIW, there are great dairy alternatives these days (and things like coconut milk and hemp milk are great fats, and useful for baking).

If your LO had a sensitivity/intolerance to dairy as an infant and you had to cut it from your diet, did he/she grow out of it? If so, when, and how did you trial it? Did anyone's LO go on to have a true dairy allergy?

DD is only 11.5 weeks with a suspected sensitivity, so I don't expect to add dairy back in to my diet any time soon, but I'm just curious!
