@Anagram: Girl, we are going through the same freaking cycle. Since he started preschool last august, we have not gone 3 straight weeks without being sick. Bronchitis, hand foot mouth, numerous head colds, a sinus infection, and this week he has strep and an ear infection. It's the last week of school and I'm praying the summer off with help his immune system recover because this has been awful.

Thank you so much everyone!

@BananaPancakes: we're doing treatments every 4-5 hours during the day - after his morning bottle, before his afternoon nap, and before his bedtime bottle. We don't do them overnight because he doesn't have distressed breathing now, just a very junky cough. I just know he's going to be asthmatic, I've resigned myself to it. Too much family history and early warning signs :(

@tysonja: My mom has mentioned prednisone as something she used for my asthmatic brother when he got RSV as an infant, but it seems like a non-option for my pedi. Hopefully with the warmer weather and his growing immune system this is gone ASAP. I'm so sorry you went through 5 months of this, but I'm a little relieved to hear that it's not unheard of to go on this long.

@regberadaisy: She didn't send him for a chest x-ray yet, but she's mentioned it as a possibility if this goes on much longer. He's doing okay - he's pretty happy generally and isn't retracting with his breathing anymore, so that's a relief. The cough is just very "junky" and it's gone on for so long that I've started to get pretty fed up.

@Mrs Green Grass: They didn't. It doesn't seem to fit those symptoms, other than the duration of the cough, so I don't think that could be it - but when I read that it's sometimes referred to as the "100 day cough" I totally thought "that sounds about right"

@HappyBaker: Wow, very similar! LO has MSPI and we switched from breastfeeding to Alimentum formula at 10 weeks. I think all this stuff is somewhat correlated - I mentioned both my LOs have eczema, both are MSPI, family history of asthma and eczema (and dairy allergies as babies - both grandmas were dairy-allergic babies in the 50s, before this was really a well-known "thing"). LO is on Zantac and thickened feeds for his reflux. We're basically a hot mess over here right now!

@Anagram: No, no daycare. But I think this was caught via his big brother, who went to a 2 year old birthday party with approximately 50 other kids and caught the worst cold of his young life, but recovered in 2 weeks. LO2 caught the same head cold, and then it just moved into his chest and never left. I can't imagine how difficult this would be with daycare and juggling two work schedules (and no sleep!) So much respect!!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I've been holding LO over his cool mist humidifier to make him cough, because that totally works to clear things up, at least temporarily! Using the nebulizer every 4-5 hours definitely seems to lessen the symptoms - the few days that things have gotten in the way and we've gone longer between treatments during the day, his cough has definitely gotten worse again. So frustrating!

It seems from everyone's stories that this tends to clear by the summer. Our pedi said the same. One more reason I cannot wait for it to start! Also, I'm thinking I won't be having anymore mid-winter babies.

@keepcalmcarrie: our youngest was sick all winter with RSV then bronchiolitis then pneumonia. She was sick December - May, and it's been exhausting and emotionally tolling and definitely worrisome!

My oldest is in preschool and kept bringing home the germs. At one point I kept her home from school for a week or two, just to avoid all the germs in hopes of my youngest getting better!

As for the illness, we found that super steamy showers several times a day helped loosen all the phlegm and made her cough (so her lungs would clear) and made her sinuses drain, so we could effectively use the nose Frida. We did that many times a day so it became repetitive but very worthwhile and effective.

A nevulizer didn't help much the first time she had rsv, but was very effective the second time she got bronchiolitis and I found myself using it every 4 hours when she had pneumonia.

@keepcalmcarrie: Is your LO in daycare? Last winter, when my LO started daycare at 6 months (in January), she immediately got sick and it turned into bronchiolitis and her cough lingered (and would get worse, slightly better but not disappear, and then reappear---like she was getting reinfected over and over) for 5 months. =( She was basically sick from January to the end of May. Then we had 2 weeks of wellness, then she got sick once more with a bad cough in June and then I got out of school for summer break and she was really able to get out of it.

I think her immune system was just constantly battered. Her cough never went away those whole 5 months--it was awful. No one in our house slept, Dh and I missed tons of work, at one point we paid something like $700 for my mom to fly in last minute because I felt so guilty for LO being in daycare when she was still coughing.

All I can say is that she did eventually get better and this year (her 2nd year in daycare) has been much, much better!

@keepcalmcarrie: Our babies are eerily similar! L has had the same thing, he had bronchiolitis really bad around 4 weeks old and then again recently like a month ago, but he is still also hacking / wheezy / congested. The last time we went they also had us start the nebulizer but it really made no difference, and our ped said if it was going to work it would make a difference immediately. We're at the point where his nasty sounding breathing just seems normal to us, but strangers / family members are always shocked / think he sounds awful.

What I am thinking now, is maybe it's all related to the reflux / MSPI / dairy intolerance that we are trying to figure out formula-wise. I'm sure its a long shot, but some of the symptoms for all of those things can also be bad congestion and breathing issues. L is not colicky, he's generally a pretty happy baby so reflux isn't something that has been on our radar. If our newest formula we are trying this week doesn't work I'm going to see if we can try out a reflux med and see if it makes any difference.

Hang in there!

@keepcalmcarrie: my little one had bronchiolitis too. Our ped was hesitant to prescribe anything at the sick visit so we waited it out and thankfully it cleared. Did they send your LO for a chest X-ray? It's the only way to be sure it hasn't turned into pneumonia? Hoe is LO doing??

i'm so sorry your baby is going through this! my LO#2 caught it around Christmas when he was 2 months old. it lasted until late spring, so he was wheezy for around 5 months long. I was pretty worried too, but my doctor (I saw a few) basically said that it had to work itself out of the system and that the warm weather would help it go away (which it did). within those 5 months or so we brought him to the ER once (when he first got sick) where he had the nebulizer and got suctioned, after another month or so he was prescribed a nebulizer to use for a few weeks, and after that did not help we had oral prednisone for awhile as well. I don't think it helped a lot either. When summer began it went away and it hasn't come back since (he's 20 months now). sometimes when he gets a cold he is wheezier than other kids, but my doc basically said to keep and eye on him when was sick, and later when he is older and doing sports, to keep an eye on him for possible asthma.

hope your LO gets better soon!!!

ETA: I will say that after the first month (when was really sick), it didn't affect his sleeping, but man he was wheezy all the time!

I can't believe they just prescribed a nebulizer! That was the first thing they did when we went in when it was suspected. And they immediately ordered a chest X-ray just in case it was pnemoniua and they were missing it. They tell us to even use the nebulizer every time he gets a head cold that moves into his chest because of how quick it can turn into bronchitis.
How often are you doing treatments? I'm surprised they aren't more concerned about asthma. They ask us every single time we go in for anything since his bronchitis if he's had any breathing issues since.

I feel like I'm at the end of my rope.

LO2 (18 weeks) has had bronchiolitis for SIX WEEKS now. We've been to the doctor four times because of it - with the initial cold in early April, with a follow up 2 weeks later because he was much worse (when the bronchio diagnosis was made), and the past 2 weeks because there was no improvement whatsoever.

At the most recent appointment last Monday, our pedi prescribed an albuterol/nebulizer treatment. It's made a slight difference, but the coughing/wheezing/rattling are still definitely there. Dr. said at this point there's nothing else to do except wait it out, because it hasn't turned into pneumonia (no fever).

How much longer can this conceivably go on? Is it normal? Should I push for something - anything - else to be done or tested for? Both my brothers had childhood asthma, both my babies have eczema, and LO1 has had croup twice, so respiratory/inflammatory issues are rampant in his family medical history.

I feel so badly for him, and at this point for my toddler and for myself too. LO's sleep (always bad) is now horrendous, partly because of the cough and mostly now because he's hit the 4 month regression. He's clearly teething. He's a grumpy mess, and now I am too, and it's not fair to anyone.

Please tell me this is almost certain to resolve soon...
