EDD in February. My husband and I both got flu shots as soon as they came out. Every chance I get, I'm encouraging relatives to get it too; some effectiveness is still better than nothing. We will be extra cautious about going out during flu season and will try to avoid curious strangers getting close to the baby.

Hubby and I also got Tdap, and anyone who wants to spend much time with baby will be asked to get that.

If you get the flu shot while pregnant, the vaccine is passed onto to your unborn child, so it's not just for their own protection that pregnant women are advised to get the flu shot. Breast milk further boosts a baby's immunity. Even if this year's shot is not as effective against all strains circulating, it is quite effective against some, and some is better than all. So I'm still using that as the primary means of defence and plan to enforce hand washing, which I would have done anyway. My EDD is April 1st, still considered flu season in Canada.

My friend's husband just tested positive for the flu and she has a fever, though tested negative. The doctor gave them both tamiflu and then recommended if possible that they have someone else take care of their son elsewhere until next next week. He's about 6mo. Not sure if this is related to the flu shot's efficacy this year or just extra precaution, but she's pretty concerned :-(

My first was born during H1N1 (remember that!!) and we just asked for hand washing. DS#2 was born in late December last year, which was a nasty flu season, and I just asked for hand washing as well. I just baby wore in public places and used lots of hand sanitizer.
I wouldn't be too freaked out about it, and I'm a germaphobic :)

I had a February baby, but even where I love right now flu season is BAD. I would just request no illness if wanting to visit, good hand washing practices, etx.

I had really bad flu twice a few years back (I regret not learning). I would never want DD to experience it, especially as a baby. As a result, whilst we aren't being total hermets, we are avoiding places with sick people and being carefulw ith crowds etc.

Nope, I trust that people who are really ill wouldn't come to see a newborn, it is pretty rare to actually have flu (most people just have very bad colds) and my main concern is LO developing bad eczema like his dad. It has been proven that children who are exposed to more germs in the first two years of life are massively less likely to develop it.

DS was born in January. We just asked that if anyone had even an inkling of feeling off/getting sick/getting over being sick, that they not come visit. We also really limited other kids coming over because they carry everything!!

A nurse where I work just had her 20 month old die from the flu a few days ago. So to say the flu has me scared this year is an understatement! It's not just newborns that it's dangerous for!!

My LO was born in September. I work in healthcare and I requested that everyone visiting during her newborn period get their flu shot and make sure their Tdap was up to date. And then wash their hands before holding her. I'm definitely not a germ freak though, I'm pretty sure our dogs were already giving her kisses by the end of week one! The flu shot is still really important and does provide some immunity even if it doesn't perfectly match the strain that's out. Now I just stick with the hand washing - I have a thing of Purell on her diaper bag!

Well my older son is 2 and the baby is 7 months. Big brother got the flu shot and still got the flu. So far little brother is ok but I'm just waiting for him to catch it. When big brother was a baby he got RSV at 2 months old and had to be hospitalized for monitoring. He was born in September. I never did anything special to try to shield him. They have tons of cousins and they'll always be exposed unless I stick them in a bubble.

I'm not worried about it. DD1 was born during flu season and every one was very cautious about visiting and good about stayting away if they were even mildly un-well.

Are you concerned about the efficacy of the flu shot this year? Lo1 was born March 1st and we didn't take any speciAL precautions with him other than asking visitors tk wash their hands. We had a party for family and close friends a couple weeks after he was born, and we took him out of the house from day 1.

This time we were planning to do the same (we were planning a 2nd bday party for lo1 for a couple weeks after my due date) but the flu has me a bit spooked.

Are you going to do things differently because of it? Or is it mostly media hype?
