I have a mild dairy allergy and had chronic ear infections as a kid. Got tubes in both ears at maybe 3yo? I was never given anything but breastmilk, goats milk, or soy milk as a baby or child though.

I think it could be related, as in the predisposition for the allergy and the predisposition for the ear infections may have the same genetic link. But I don't think it's a straightforward cause and effect. I do think food is powerful and nutrition and Dietary Changes should be used as medicine more often than they are!

My friends daughter has had many long ear infections until she got tubes. She is dairy allergic. She was adopted and formula fed (not a bad thing, just a point of how much dairy she had) and started milk at 1 year old. At 18 months they pulled dairy out of her diet. She stil had infections and even busted an eardrum the day before her tubes were put in. She is on allergy meds every day now as well.

I don't know about dairy and ear infections specifically but I do believe that food can be an interesting beast and affect things we don't think about.

I was just talking to my client about putting ear tubes for LO to treat his recurring ear infections. She asked if LO was allergic to milk and I said no (in fact he gobbled it down like a champ and it is his favorite). She then said there are studies that says milk/diary allergy could link to chronic ear infections, and I could take a look at that.

Does your LO have allergy to cow's milk? What alternative did you offer, and was it successful? Did you even see a link to reduced ear infections after switching from cow's milk (or cow's milk based formula) to something else?
