The hospital ped noticed it when she had her 1 day check up. The surgeon came in a little later and did the procedure then. She has a little bit of a lip tie too, but not a huge deal. She also has a heart shaped tongue, which is a big indicator of tongue tie.

With DD2 they saw it at the hospital. We had never noticed but our older daughter has one too (she was delivered at a different hospital). I guess some hospitals are better about checking, though everyone we talked to recommended not clipping unless problems arose. Nothing's come up so we didn't get either one clipped. But our older daughter has a little gap in her teeth.

@googly-eyes: @hilsy85: same here- currently 39w2d with baby 2, and my IBCLC is on-call to come check baby for ties, in the hospital, right after she's born. We didn't get DD's fixed until she was 6 months old, and it was SO rough up until then. I want to avoid all that difficulty, colic, gas, reflux, etc. this time!

We had a LC do an in-home visit when DD was about two weeks old, and she diagnosed a slight lip tie as the reason for my pain and our latch issues. DD's was slight enough that she thought it wouldn't be an issue as she grew, and so far, that seems to be the case. No one else ever looked for one.

@googly-eyes: yeah me too! I plan on having LO#2 looked at...and if the doc at the hospital doesn't see anything, I will get a 2nd opinion just to be safe :) It's so frustrating that more pediatricians (and even some ENTs!) aren't more familiar with TTs/LTs.

@rachiecakes: do you have one too then? I do too or at least it seems that way comparing me to dh. Luckily I have straight teeth (and dh had a gap!) Sounds like at this point it will be ok. Thanks for the visual. :)

@erinpye: @hilsy85: so interesting you should say this because I always suspected the tongue tie. Dd had trouble even with bottles and I remember thinking it could be the reason for some of her gas. (Eta but because you can't see it I never pushed it, and I never thought the lip tie was a big deal..) But when I brought it up the pediatrician didn't know anything about posterior tongue ties... And since we had already moved to bottles I just kept looking for a different bottle instead. Next time around I am going to be WAY more proactive!

@rahlyrah: Same here! My ped acted like I was crazy when I told him I wasn't leaving without the pediatric ENT referral I needed to make an appt. He thought it was totally unnecessary. Then the ENT was like "Whoa. Dr O couldn't see this?! I'd rate it as moderately severe."

So much more education needs to be done. There's no way we could've BF'ed without clipping.

I checked J when my best friend was going through some BFing trouble with her 8 week old. That's the first time I realized J had one! (And a posterior tongue tie). He was 11 months old and weaning.
I have straight teeth and never had braces or speech problems. I keep asking the ped and dentist about it but they don't see any need to now (he's 2).
My friend had her sons clipped and it's been smooth sailing since (he's 1 now).

We had to make an appointment with an ENT on our own. We had such a difficult time BFing and our pedi didn't think he had a tongue tie. I knew something was up though so I took him to a specialist. The ENT was surprised because both his lip and posterior tongue tie were pretty severe and obvious.

The IBCLC I had visit us at 10 days old diagnosed LO. It was clipped when he was 2 weeks old. I think not clipping it can definitely impact breastfeeding negatively. IT tends to be genetic so that will be the first thing I have my next LO checked for in the hospital!

@googly-eyes: If your baby has a lip tie, she probably has a posterior tongue tie as well--they most often appear together, and PTTs are commonly missed because they don't present as typical tongue ties.

Clipping them goes in and out as a practice. DH has a severe one and wishes his had been clipped. He had speech issues (can't say for sure it was related, but certainly didn't help!) and has issues with stinky breath because food particles can get trapped under there and saliva which normally moved freely around the mouth doesn't wash away debris like it should which leads to build up of bacteria in the mouth which also can lead to cavities/ increased tooth decay. He was a sickly baby and had trouble gaining weight, I think a lot if that had to do with his tongue tie.

I'm sure the degree to which it's tied plays a big role in deciding if clipping is needed, but we won't hesitate to clip if the situation ever comes up for us. My mom had hers clipped and I know a few LOs who have, none of them have had any negative results, but they were all clipped very early on.

@googly-eyes: it's extremely rare to have an upper lip tie without also having a posterior tongue tie, but those are very difficult to spot. Have an IBCLC who's knowledgeable in identifying ties, or a pediatric dentist take a look. Kiddsteeth.com is a really good resource.

As I understand, in days past, midwives would routinely "clip" any ties with a sharp fingernail which of course wasn't particularly hygienic and could result in infection. The decline in this style of clipping was also hastened by the intro and increasing popularity of formula, especially within the medical community - after all, why clip to assist breastfeeding when formula was thought to be superior and the in thing!

In our case we saw an IBCLC when A was fourish weeks old and again at six weeks but unfortunately the LC failed to actually look in her mouth. Eventually it was my midwife who suspected the ties and she referred me on to a second IBCLC who specialises in ties.

@googly-eyes: oh that makes sense! I think I read somewhere that a lot of kids have theirs cut by falling when they're young too. DH is concerned about LOs gap but I figure his permanent teeth may not come in the same way and there's the option for braces. My only regret is maybe not having it clipped early on if it could have made breastfeeding less painful in the beginning but it was a month before we were able to get an appt with the ENT so that ship had sailed by then.

@dojo: Nope! I read about the tooth stuff online, so I don't know how accurate it is. I should have mentioned that! The dentist just said that when I brush her teeth I have to be very careful because if I flip her lip up too quick/hard it could snap.

@googly-eyes: I had no idea about the cavities! LO has a gap in his teeth and we haven't noticed other issues. Our pediatrician had told us to mainly watch to see if he seemed to be having difficulty with movement at all and did mention the possibility of it affecting speech. We decided to see an ENT based on that but he didn't seem to advise having it clipped at that point. I figure we will revisit the option of having it corrected if we start to see issues.

Did you LOs dentist advise clipping it?

@grizz: @dojo: I also read that it can cause cavities in the top teeth, a gap, and speech problems. I think I am going to bring it up at the next appointment (18 months) and see if it's worth correcting due to those things. I thought that she had lip tie at just a few weeks old. She couldn't even use a lot of bottles... But by that point I didn't think there was a point to worrying about it because I was EPing.

We found out at our second pediatrician appt. We also had it checked by an ENT. We didn't end up doing anything about it and it seems to be fine - hard to know if it will have much of an impact going forward. I had quite a bit of pain breastfeeding the first 8 weeks and having it clipped May have alleviated that but no way to know at this point.

I have no idea why they don't look for it at the hospital. I would have thought the lactation RN would have checked when he was having difficulty latching.

How did you find out about it?

I suspected it when bf failed, but then I kind of convinced myself that wasn't the reason why and that I had wimped out on the pain. (Still not the only reason bf didn't work out.) But when her dentist brought it up this past week I wonder if I should have brought it up. Then I got to thinking about it, and I wonder why they don't routinely check for this in the hospital? Or do they, and it was missed? They knew I was trying to bf...wouldn't this be an easy thing to check for?
