I've been wondering about this as well. I'm crossing my fingers and toes that this is our experience too! He's too young to have gone through anything yet but I am uneasy about the possibility of a full blown regression or our training not sticking. You ladies are giving me hope, though!

Honestly, once we sleep trained E at 6 months, it stuck nearly all the time. For teething, ibuprofen always helped. The 18 month regression was the only time we had trouble. Now that's behind us. Sickness, she usually sleeps through, too. Just lighter/fussier in her sleep. Anyways, I think E's kind of a unicorn baby, but....we've just had a good run of things. We haven't very often (aside from the 18 month regression) had to go in and help her go back to sleep. She may wake us up crying, but within about 5 min, she's usually settled into a new position in bed and quieted down unless a paci fell outside the crib.

We did no cry sleep solution around 5. And he has slept decently more or less ever since. Ony true regression I felt we hit was around 18m and was before a huge language burst. Everything else was weird blips of three days or less. He has never been a sleepy kid but he usually falls asleep and stays asleep pretty easily!

My LO self-soothes really well also. The only "bump" we've had was around 8 months or so, when he developed separation anxiety. I had to go back in on a few naps/bedtimes to rock and reassure him all was okay, but he seems to be moving out of it now.

She self-soothes really well and we have had no major regressions. She's 12 months.

Both of my DDs have been brilliant sleepers and haven't really hit any bumps in the road to speak of. DD1 (nearly 27 months) was putting herself to sleep and sleeping 12 hours through the night before she was 3 months old and she's never gone back from there. We never had any sleep regressions, nor have we ever had to rock or nurse her to sleep (aside from the newborn days when that is just a given!). The only times we ever had issues was when she learned a new major skill (crawling, talking, walking), at which point her sleep would be disturbed for two or three nights, but then she just settled back down again. She does occasionally wake during the night but happily plays on her own and puts herself back to sleep - we hardly ever have to go in there after she's gone down for the night. Teething never bothered her and touch wood, she hasn't been sick much so that hasn't been an issue either.

DD2 is similar, not sleeping quite as long of stretches and still wakes once during the night for a feed (around 4:00 a.m.) but she nearly always puts herself to sleep. She is still in our room whilst we wait to close on our new house, which makes her sleep a bit more disrupted than it would be if she were in her own room, but she's great at self soothing. She is 7 months old and so far, we haven't hit any sleep regressions, and I'm pretty confident the 4 am feed is going to be dropped as soon as she's in her own room and doesn't see me sleeping right next to her portacot! Teething does affect her a bit more though - she just had her two top teeth come through last week and we had three days/nights of fairly crap sleep, but then they both popped through within a couple of days of each other and her sleep immediately went back to normal.

Good luck, I hope your LO continues to self soothe and keeps on being a great sleeper!

@Mae:  sorry, the 4 month regression was brutal here as well. You do come out the other side though, I promise! Hopefully because she was a good sleeper before, she will be again. My son never self settled before the regression, and definitely couldn't after, until we sleep trained.

My lo was a rock star sleeper. From an early age she preferred putting herself to sleep and it was just super easy-- swaddle her up, binky in, set her down, leave the room. I never once had to go pick her up once I set her down to nap. Then. 4 mo regression hit and it all went to shit. Hoping we can get back to easy sleeping soon.

...how did their sleep go in the long term?

After a bit of sleep training and circumstantial CIO (for some reason I always had to go to the bathroom when my son was going down for naps so he learned to fuss himself to sleep), my son is now excellent at putting himself to sleep. I can put him down wide awake and he will roll around and chat to himself, and fall asleep. At night he wakes at 4 or 5am for a feed, and always feeds voraciously so I know/feel that he really is hungry. He's also a bit underweight so I don't mind the feed.

He's only 6 months old though, and I know we have a lot of challenges still to come! For those parents who don't rock, nurse or soothe your baby to sleep, how did they weather things like teething, regressions, illnesses, etc? My guy had his 6 months shots yesterday and was running a low temperature, and woke screaming at 12:30 which he hasn't done in ages. He had a huge feed and went back down easily, but it did get me thinking...what might be in store for the future?

Please tell me positive and negative stories!
