My son is almost 2 and NEVER goes to bed before 9:30-10. Many nights he is up until 11-12. He usually sleeps until 9-10 am. Sometimes later.

Thank you! This is helpful!
Although I wonder if I should have rephrased it differently since she DOES sleep in those late hours but has to be rocked/held. If we let her stay awake then she's calm temporarily but then starts screaming from being overtired and not knowing how to get herself to sleep. :/

@Mrs. Pinata: it's crazy, but he's very rarely miserable. Usually when he's overtired he gets super hyper and wound up. Every now and then it happen, but it's rare when he's cranky/has a meltdown. Those are usually when he wakes up, haha
Sometimes he'll fall asleep on the way home from school, especially if they've been outside playing all day. And he's a beast when he wakes up, so I try to keep him awake in the car.

@Mrs. Pinata: I'd rather my son not nap because then bedtime is at a reasonable hour! I think he naps at school because of peer pressure. He isn't cranky without a nap either.

@rachiecakes: Ack! That sounds terrifying! (no naps at one year old).

This is good I can mentally prepare for this. With Little P we still have long 2.5 hr naps at almost 3 years old, and as a work-at-home mom no naps kind of terrifies me! :)

@Mrs. Pinata: I usually have to wake him up at 7 for daycare. On his own, he'd sleep until 7:30 or so. He takes a 2 hour nap at school. He just does not require a lot of sleep and has been like that since the day he was born. He never was a sleepy newborn either. But he's happy and healthy, so I try to roll with it.

@mrbee: We do both of those things! In the morning we bring her out to the living room with big open windows (we honestly often have to wake her by 8am otherwise she would keep sleeping and I'm trying to shift her 'clock'). And definitely no bright lights or screens in the evenings. She's just getting rocked the whole evening in her dark room. Mr. P is watching movies on his ipad with headphones, but she's got the hat over her eyes and it's not right next to her.

What do you mean by "moving up" bedtime? I don't think she's over-tired. I think it's just her nature to be fussy/uncomfortable/fidgety/colicky in that time frame and needs to be held. :/ I hope it's not a forever thing!

@rachiecakes: @Mamasig: Since your kids are up late, how late do they sleep in the morning?

DS1 has always gone to sleep on the later side. The earliest he has ever gone to sleep is 8:30ish. Now at 2.5, he falls asleep around 10. If he doesn't has a nap then it's 8:30 or so. Fighting it only leads to frustration on my part. I think so much of it is just their nature.

J's never been colicky or fussy, but would not sleep until 9:30/10pm, that never changed. And he'll stay up much later than that if we're in a hotel or anywhere away from home.
Sometimes I can get him in bed by 9pm but it takes a lot of fresh air and physical activity for that to happen! (he's 3 now)

@Mrs. Pinata: It may be possible to shift her circadian rhythm! (Our kids are night owls too, and were able to shift to be morning people.) Is she getting bright light first thing in the morning? That helped us shift bedtime up. And avoiding bright lights/screens in the evening helps too.

Also, I'd try maybe moving up bedtime too... maybe that will sidestep the overtired issue?

Good luck!! Argh, bedtime issues are so brutal. Hope it gets better soon!!

When did they start having a reasonable bedtime? We'd done loads of stuff with Little P (2.5 months) as she has been a pretty fussy and colicky baby. The worst time of day has historically been from about 8pm-midnight (often starting earlier or later.)

She's usually pretty good during the day and naps and eats pretty well (although she needs A LOT of soothing to get to sleep and a hat covering her eyes, but that's enough for another post). But, once that evening hits, she won't let us set her down for anything even though she's clearly tired.

So, after her evening feed (usually between 7 & 8) when Little P would have gone down for the night, Mr. P sits and rocks her until she goes down for the night around 11pm. He will even do a dream feed in there to get one more feed in her. If he tries to put her down she screams, but she will sleep if he's holding and rocking her (thank goodness for this awesome man who does this so I can clean up the house and go to bed at a reasonable hour before MOTN feedings!).

Anyway, we're hoping this restlessness is something she will grow out of since Mr. P and I are kind of desperate to actually spend time together! And for her own benefit of good sleep habits, etc. etc.

If you had a baby that wouldn't sleep well in this time of day when did your child grow out of it?
