My son was only 18 months when I found out - we told him after the 12 week ultrasound. I was worried he'd tell people, and I didn't really think he'd get it. He did understand by the time the baby arrived, though.

I was so sick and LO1 (3.5) was kind of concerned so we tried to tell him early and even took him to my dating scan but he just insisted that I ate too much. He finally understood when I showed him the pictures from the NT scan. It's been a few weeks since then and I think he forgot.

We told my 3 year old right away this time. I made it clear that sometimes babys grow and sometimes they don't and only the doctor can tell us if it is growing.

@winniebee: we told my 3 yo LO at 13 weeks after a good scan and making it out of the first Tri. We had a loss at 12 weeks previously so we didn't tell a single person prior to that point. We didn't want her to deal with an early loss of we had another one plus she can't keep a secret so we wanted her to be able to share the good news! She was thrilled!

We told our 3.5 yo after we got good results from both the NIPT and NT scan, right before we told the family. We didn't want him sharing before we were ready, and I had 2 prior losses, so we wanted to make sure things were looking good first. He's so excited :)

My plan is to share the news with my 3.5 year old after the NIPT results as well. He understands that his aunt has a baby in her tummy and talks about it frequently so I can only imagine how many people he will tell when he is going to be a big brother. We figure we will share with him once we are ready for the whole world to know.

We waited until we were comfortable with the world knowing. At 3 years old discretion was not one of her strengths. Within a few days of telling her one of the other daycare parents congratulated me BC his son had brought the news home.

We just told LO (almost 3 1/2) this past weekend, after we got back our test results. We had originally wanted to tell him first but decided to hold off as we had no idea if he would get it or not. He definitely gets it (in a 3 year old type of way!) so we are happy we waited... we felt better knowing that everything looked OK before introducing such a big change to him.

Also, because he is old enough to understand, we didn't want him waiting forever and getting (maybe?) frustrated that is was still so much time before baby arrives.

@coopsmama: funny! F had no clue what I'm talking about. I'll tell him there is a baby brother in mama's belly. All he picks up on is "belly" and lifts his shirt and starts poking his belly button and laughing.

I told both kids right away this time - as in the night I found out! And you may be surprised, M was 16 months when I got pregnant and she is much more attached to the new baby then my 2.5 year old. She's been hugging and kissing my belly since before there was even a bump! Almost daily she comes over and says "hi baby" and pulls my full panel pants down to kiss my belly. I've been amazed by her awareness!!

Same as you, we told DS1 right away. He was a few months shy of two. That ended in a chemical pregnancy. Then we got pregnant with DS2 just as he was turning two and told him a few weeks later. If were were to have a third baby, I think I'd wait until we decided to tell others. One - to make sure the pregnancy is viable, two - so DS didn't tell our parents before we were ready!

DS is2.5 and he understands that a baby is in my belly. We told him when I was 12 weeks. He asks to kiss and hug my belly. He likes to talk about what he will teach his new baby brother. I doubt he really gets that a baby will be here to stay in June! Ha!

DD was only 2 when I was pregnant but we told her straight away because I was so sick all day every day. If we have a third we will tell her straight away again so she knows why mummy is ill and no fun and doesn't worry or get upset thinking anything else. If that wasn't an issue though, I would probably wait until the 12 week ultrasound, just because if I miscarried again, I wouldn't want her to go through the upset.

If your child is old enough to really understand pregnancy or that a sibling is on the way, when did you tell your child that you were pregnant?

DS1 was only 2 when I was in the early stages of pregnancy with DS2. I think we told him pretty early because he would be rough with me and we didn't want him to be so rough. But now DS1 is almost 4 and knows perfectly well what a new baby means. So I'm hesitant to tell him anything about the pregnancy until later. I'm 9 weeks and thinking that we'll tell him if our NIPT test results come back ok. So probably around 11-12 weeks. DS2 is only 15 months and he probably won't understand any of it until the baby is here :)
