@Cherrybee: You win. I'm so sorry, there are just no words for that. And why is it always at the most inopportune times? In my house, the girls always poo the second DH and I sit down for our own dinner.

Yes,@PinkElephant: , the mess is no joke! E took herself to the toilet at 5.30am the other morning and, it would appear, had a massive crap. It smeared all over the seat as she slid off and then featured in her bed and on her fluffy rug, where she must have sit to play for a while. What a lovely thing to wake up to - we had to throw the rug away!

Thanks all for the great suggestions - sorry it's taking me forever to get back to this. In the interim, I've discovered that she can't actually get her zippered pjs off by herself. Darling DD1 was taking care of that for her - such a helpful big sister! ARGH! A good threat to DD1 about losing various privileges solved that problem. Now I've just got to keep her in zipper PJs and deal with the stripping (or put her in PJs) at naptime. The resistance to a diaper has not worn off, so we've been taking potty training a little more seriously - underpants at home, diaper when out - she actually went to the park/lunch in training pants this weekend and stayed dry!

@Cherrybee: arghhhh don't tell me I need to put her in a bed so she can take herself to the toilet. I feel like the ability to explore will open an entirely different can of worms! :) Also, she's discovered it's really fun to pee standing up/sitting backwards on the little potty - that'd be a fun mess for me to wake up to :silly:

@birdofafeather: Thanks! I really appreciated the sense of humor in your post. @Mrs. Jacks: had a really good idea about the shirt over zipper PJs - that seemed to work.

@MrsSRS: I may try this at naptime - but there is no way she's getting pretty duct tape; I feel like that would incentivize it for her!!! :)

Oh god, this brings back memories! We tried pull ups (harder to tear off apparently), but they were not absorbent enough and she leaked. We tried gaffer tape, but she still managed to get the nappy off. Eventually, we bought footless, zippy sleepers and she wore them backwards. We had her in them for months and only moved back to PJ's when we potty trained (she still isn't night trained, but she goes before bed so pull ups work well now). She still takes her pull up off when she wakes in the morning, but she can take herself to the toilet now. Nightmare.

My 20 month old has been doing this intermittently the last month at nap time. I've busted out an old sleep sack and put it on backwards.

i went through this a few times, and when she was that age, i think i remember that i had to do zippered jammies, possibly backward. previously, i did sleep sacks on backward!

i did a search and here's my old thread about this! hahaha.

One strip of duct tape starting just behind the tab on one side and wrapped around the front and ending behind the tab on the other side solves the problem. It sounds a little odd, but there is no discomfort, so no harm, and it's totally effective. You want the tape to end where they cannot easily tug on the ends, but you do NOT want to make a complete loop like a belt. You can even buy pretty tape.

Lo is only 27 months so it might come back, but lo had about 3 days in a row where when she woke up she took her pants and diaper off, and peed all over the crib before we could get her... But it was only like 3 days. Crossing my fingers the phase is over!

@PinkElephant: we went through this phase. LO would wake up early and take her diaper off before we came to get her. We used a cloth diaper cover with snaps over top and that solved the problem. We had covers around since we used cloth during the day and disposables at night, but that approach of preventing the opportunity was the easiest for us.

My LO only did that a couple of times, then she stopped. I didn't really do anything special I think the novelty wore off? We didn't actually potty train until much later.

The short question:
How long did the phase last? Did he/she eventually stop, or did the behavior continue through potty training? Did you have to "do something" to stop it?

The long story:
My two year old is kind of potty training (a very child-led approach - she uses the potty for pee a lot, poop sometimes, but still wears a diaper and doesn't always tell me she needs to go when we are out until she's actually going. I intend to fully potty train in a few weeks/a month after our next vacation)....and has taken to stripping her PJs and diaper off at night. Sometimes because she has to go to the bathroom (so I take her if she calls for me), sometimes I think it's just because she can. It went on for almost two hours tonight - once she pooped for me, once she was objecting because there was a little poop in her diaper (I guess she wasn't wiped well), once she had to pee, and twice she just felt like throwing her diaper off). We tried several types of PJs, including zip up one pieces. I did not put them on backwards because they have feet.

I'm hoping not to have to buy footless 1-piece PJs (or cut hers, because they're pretty new and I've got another girl on the way!), but it may come to that!
