For that, yes I would. My kneecap dislocated a few years ago and walking, going up and down the stairs, kneeling in church, using the brakes in my car were all so painful. I was reminded every second that I was broken and it was so depressing. Save that knee!!

If you don't want to give up running you could try water running. I did it a few years ago when I hurt my foot. It can be just as hard as running on land, but you don't have all the impact on your joints.

Can you run on a cushioned track? I know not as fun as trails, but it will save you some wear and tear in the long run.

I second the swimming idea! It's a really tough workout and you won't hurt your joints!

I've had to stop doing a lot of things in my life due to my migraines. I can't eat a lot of things, chocolate is a big one.

And I recently had surgery which is going to stop me from doing a lot of things that I'd like to do.... I probably can do them but won't because I don't want to risk it having to have the surgery again. I have a nerve stimulator in my neck and the wires go from my neck to my battery pack in my lower back. If I do something to jiggle the wires and the leads come out it would suck and I'd have to go back in for surgery... which means no roller coasters, skiing, really anything with sudden movements.

Am I upset about this? Yes. But is it worth it for less migraines? Totally.

@jessiejo17: Yikes!!! Hopefully you won't need it that soon!

I guess my problem is that my knee feels great for the most part, even while running. The only time it was bothering me was after I had re-torn my meniscus when I was pregnant (and I waited a year before getting it repaired because I was breastfeeding). I just don't like knowing I'm getting older ;-)

I am also a 27 year old with the knees of a 60 year old, and I have done everything I can to extend the life of my knees. I was having surgery every year to year and a half and it just wasn't worth it. I love swimming and walks, unfortanately I have given up treadmills, biking, tough work outs to save my knees. I was told I'll have a knee replaement by the time I'm 40.

Well, since your average knee replacement only lasts about 10 years, and it takes about 2 months of recovery time before you are back to your normal activities after each knee replacement, I would delay getting into that cycle as long as humanly possible.

I def don't always listen to the dr. but I'd def take it into serious consideration in this case.
Can you schedule some time with a trainer? There's lots of exercising that can be done that are a bit less harsh on your knees.
I ran D1 CC and track and we often ran 60-80 mile weeks during peak training and that's just too much for my body in the long run. So since college I've gotten into cycling and lifting and stuff, I still run alot but I do other stuff to give my joints a break as well.

I guess it depends on your goals. Replaced knees have a finite lifespan and I'd only want to get it done once and as late in my life as possible. If you don't care how many surgeries you are going to need, then you could just wear your knee out... That seems a pretty bold move and it seems possible that you could reverse some of the damage if you backed off now.

My dad has bad knees too (3 knee surgeries and no cartiledge left in his knees). He still runs eventhough he shouldn't, but not as long of distances. Can you try running less and on a softer surface? Also, swimming I think is good because it's great on your joints.

It depends on what it is andhow serious. In your case I would stop because a knee is a big thing, as compared to general health advice

I would also like to add that diversifying your workouts sure beats the heck out of rehab! Years ago, I failed to follow medical advice about my running (I was running 40+ miles a week), and I ended up with stress fractures in both shins and spent months in the pool as a result (for rehab). If I had slowed down and reduced my weekly mileage I probably could have avoided that!

It would depend on the severity of the consequences of disobeying the advice. In your case, I would quit running and find an alternative or just walk for a longer distance to lessen the "pounding" on my knee joint.

Running kind of is what it is, so depending on the severity of knee problem I would probably try to replace it with something else like pps said. I would not give up bootcamps/training programs. A good trainer will be able to work around any injury and help you stay strong and give you tough workouts, even helping your problem spots with corrective work. It really annoys me when doctors tell you that you have to stop serious exercise altogether.

I don't know-- I don't love anything athletic that much, so it's hard to put myself in your place! But DH has bad knees and loves playing basketball- he's had 2 surgeries on EACH knee, but he still plays. He won't run though, even though he likes it, because he wants to save the miles he has left in his knees for things he loves. (I do not know if that is scientifically sound logic but it's how he feels!)

@BabyBoecksMom: It depends on what it is, but most likely yes because I'm a hypochondriac.

But, um, stop running! As someone with chronic knee pain who used to be a runner--I gave that up in a heartbeat because walking without pain is pretty darn important to me. Time for you to take up biking!

I'm a little stubborn and probably wouldn't. he he

At my checkup from my knee surgery, my orthopedic doctor actually told me that have the knee of a 60 yr old and I'm pretty much guaranteed to need a knee replacement in the next 20 years, so he wants me to stop running and doing bootcamps. :-(

ETA: It's hard for me to just stop because being outside and running/tough workouts are my outlet when I need to clear my head.
