@.twist.: My dog doesn't really like sleeping on the leather couch anyway, but if we leave a throw blanket on the couch when we go out, it is always all bunched up and warm when we get home, suspiciously like a little dog was just sleeping on it...

We have a very cuddly English bulldog. I am very OCD with cleaning so here's how I deal with his shedding and smells:

-our lamp bergere has been a life savor for sucking out smells (dog, cooking, anything!) best $50 investment ever.
-I bought couch covers designed for homes with pets. They are easy to throw in the wash and take off when company comes.
-I swiffer vacuum every day - I love it because it's lightweight, portable, and picks up dog hair like crazy! It only takes me a few minutes to do the whole downstairs
-I'm always lighting a Yankee candle

Those things have helped me stay semi sane. I'm hoping to get leather furniture and a house cleaner to help even more

@Foodnerd81: I totally do the blanket thing. Our dog is not allowed on the couches, but I come home and find the blankets torn off the couch and on the floor. Apparently, he's a nester. I've given up.

hah

@Mrs. Jacks: OMG I LOVE bernese mountain dogs. They just look like you want to hug them! But I can only imagine the shedding.

I second the idea of putting a blanket down and only taking it off when people come over. Easier to wash that weekly, too, than couch cushions, and even if someone comes by unexpectedly it's quick to take it off. Plus if you are wearing black pants where the dog fur shows, you can fold it back away from your seat-- my parents' dog sleeps on their couch and 1) it really sticks, but she is a stinky dog anyway, and 2) I sit for two minutes and come away covered in dog fur.

We teach our dog not to sleep on the couch, but I am fully aware that he jumps up as soon as we close the door, he just doesn't do it in front of us. But we have leather couches, which really helps with the fur sticking to it.

We have a big Bernese Mountain Dog. Without careful maintenance, our whole house could smell like dog. We schedule a bath for him at the groomers every 1-2 weeks. He is not allowed on the furniture (have you ever seen a Bernese shed?!). We have our house cleaner do a deep clean every 2 weeks. We have hardwood floors which are easy to clean and only put rugs in areas where he is not likely to lay.

He is such a loving part of our lives that it is worth putting up with the extra hair in everything including our food... but I'm not up for stinky furniture!

I have a tiny little dog that only goes outside to use the restroom, so I would say no. She barely sheds and gets a bath about once a week.
I would say that certain breeds seem to emit a stronger odor (I was told it was for hunting/tracking purposes) and often owners get immune to their own pets' smells, so maybe I just don't smell her? lol
Something I DO notice that makes a BIG difference is flooring (carpet/hard surface) and vacuuming. I'm TERRIBLY allergic to cats, but my friends & family that use the Dyson regularly (like at least once a week) I don't smell or have as much allergies.

Yea, out dog is stinky. We try to bathe him on a regular basis, but sometimes it just doesn't happen. He sneaks up on the couch and makes it smelly. I usually end up vacuuming and febreezing our couch a lot. It's definitely more noticeable if I don't vacuum.

@coacheswife123: maybe get some of that puppy perfume? From the pet store. I burn Scentsy from the time I get home until bed time, and if company is coming over and i'm worried about smells I run around with air freshener. I don't worry so much about her smelling, as I do trying to make the house smell good.

Wash your cusions often, if they unzip throw them in the wash! If not use a little soap and water and scrub them where they are. That makes a world of diffrence!

Hmmm. I have never noticed our dog stinking up our furniture. Maybe you could try vacuuming the couch on a regular basis? Maybe that will help. Also, I'd put a blanket in the spot where she lays and wash that regularly, that's what my parents do.

Yes, if I go longer than a week without vacuuming our house takes on a dog smell. All I really need to do is vacuum the rug and couch and it smells fine again. She gets really scared of the vacuum and I tsk tsk her that it's all because of her ;)

Do you feel like your furniture smells like your pet? we have a 60 lb lab that we wouldn't trade for the world, but sometimes I wonder if she makes our living room stinky. She's not a stinky dog at all - I never think she stinks - and is inside almost all of the time except for walks and going in the back yard a few times a day. she just sleeps on the couch/chair all day and also at night.

Also, when I sweep I SWEAR she gets offended . Haha! she looks at all the hair I'm sweeping up and acts so put off with me for it! I sweep probably every 3 days and each time I'm amazed at the amount of dog hair I collect each time. :(

Any tips on how to keep our furniture fresh without kicking her off. That would never work - as she is rotten and we are going during the day and couldn't keep her off anyway!
