I see some hope on this thread. DD was STTN by 8 weeks (like 9+ hours) and 5 hours by 5 weeks, and I'm so scared when people say DD2 will be a horrible sleeper! I hope it's a family trait and she follows in her sister's footsteps and loves to sleep!

@mrs. bird: I completely agree (which is part of why I'm terrified to have nother baby, cuz #1 was a stellar sleeper), but my sister is an exception. Her first has been an awful sleeper (at 21 months I think he's STTN 5x), and she's 12 weeks pregnant with #2. Personally, I think she's nuts.

@mrs. bird: I agree with this theory! Our doc asked if we might try for another and I told him it wasn't on the table until this LO STTN. We are pushing two years now...
And to answer the question-yes!

LO1 was an average sleeper as a baby who naturally turned into a great sleeper as a toddler. LO2 was an average sleeper as a small baby who turned into a poor sleeper as an older baby and we then had to sleep train, which we never did with LO2. Now he's mostly solid, but still not as good as big bro.

both our kids are good sleepers. both started sttn at 8 weeks and sleep from about 730-7. Lo#1 is a consistently good napper but lo#2 isn't. he's definitely a catnapper. but i'll take sttn over bad naps! ;-)

My first DS1 was and still is an awesome sleeper. He started sleeping 12 hours straight through the night at 2 months occasionally and then consistently at 3 months. Took two, 2 hour naps until he turned one and is still taking one nap that ranges from 2 to 3 hours (he's now 4). DS2 is 8 months old, has slept through the night a handful of times, but usually wakes up twice a night. He still resists bedtime and will cry when we put him down and loves to go through nap skipping phases. I wouldn't classify him as a horrible sleeper compared to the average 8 month old, but definitely horrible compared to my DS1!

i have a theory to explain this because it's been true in a couple families i've worked with- if the first had been as bad a sleeper as the second, there would be no second :D the horrible sleeper is usually the last baby, easy babies allow younger siblings to be made, horrible sleepers inspire vigilant BC usage and allow little time for grownup time

L was STTN by 12 weeks (started earlier, but 100% at 12 weeks). She has always been a FANTASTIC sleeper, including telling us that she's ready for bed!
K was STTN by 7 weeks, and is still continuing to do so at 4.5 months. Sooo... fingers crossed it continues!

You have hope! :)

Well my 1st wasn't a great sleeper but isn't super horrible. He just doesn't require much sleep and doesn't want to sleep alone so he sleeps with us. Little brother is a hundred times better. So in my experience they've been different. Honestly, I'm glad my bad sleeper was first. I didn't expect much from DS2 but was pleasantly surprised.

This scares the be-jeebers out of me! LO1 is and always has been a great sleeper and I am so thankful b/c that was my biggest worry pre-baby. I'm not KU'd or even trying BUT we do eventually want another and the thought of a bad sleeper straight scares me

My first was a good sleeper. My second was STTN at 5 days, but that went south around 4-5 months. At 8 months we have good nights and bad ones - last night she slept through, the night before she was up 3-4 times and basically insisted on sleeping with us.

Yep. My oldest son sounds just like yours. His little brother...well, I don't want to scare you. But sorry, I think it's rare to get that lucky twice! I have had many middle of the night crying sessions and last night finally said screw it, I can't do this anymore and started CIO because I'm at my wit's end. Everything has been one step forward, two steps back. In all other aspects he is an easy happy baby, moreso than his brother was...but sleep. Oh, I miss sleep.

The one good thing about this is that the older one being an awesome sleeper means that they are less likely to wake up and refuse to go back to sleep when the younger one wakes up crying. That has happened to some of my friends, but if L does wake up he just goes right back to sleep on his own - I would never even know he gets woken up sometimes if it weren't for the fact that the next morning he'll be a little crabby and end up taking his nap early.

If your first was a good sleeper, was your second a horrible sleeper? I've heard this is a common theme among a lot of my friends and family.

My son is 17 months and I'm not pregnant again yet but hoping to be soon -- and I have to say this is one thing I'm terrified of. My son STTN at 2 months old, sleeps 11 hours straight at night and takes a 2-3 hour nap a day. He loves his crib so much that in the morning he will lay in bed slowly waking up and then play/talk to himself for a good 45 minutes before we go get him. He's always been like this -- so I feel like there's no way we will be this lucky next time around!

So if you have two or more kids, were they completely different in their sleep habits?!
