Offered pacifier but he preferred his thumb, he was sucking his thumb/fingers during ultrasounds, haha

@Mrs. Jacks: DH was a thumbsucker until kindergarten and I wasn't at all and we both have straight teeth, no braces. J has perfect straight teeth and is a thumbsucker.

B took a pacifier (hardly - we had to force it) for about 5 months and his teeth came in straight. E took them (addicted, different brand though) for 5 months but we stopped giving it to her when we started sleep training. She didn't get her first tooth until 12 months so hers were fine too. N still takes the paci, only at night, but she's 6 months. Her teeth haven't come in yet but we'll probably stop soon! We need all the help we can get in the teeth department - DH's teeth still aren't straight, even after 3 years of Invisalign...and I also needed braces for 3 years.

@PrincessBaby: Our first didn't take one and our second did. Our first has perfectly straight teeth and the second doesn't... but they have different bio parents, so that could have something to do with it!

DS1 used a wubbanub. At first he was just eh with it but then really liked it. He gave it up pretty easily at 15 months.

We offered one to to DS2 and he never took it.

If we have another, I'll offer it again. Each kid is just so different.

@Radish: @LuLu Mom: I think I am going to try your approach and offer it early (as long as breastfeeding is going ok), and then hopefully stop offering it around 4-6 months.

DD1 never took to a pacifier. I've given DD2 one a couple times when she is comfort sucking/sleeping and waking up when I remove my boob. She usually passes out quickly so I'm not terribly worried about her getting hooked.

LO1 took it occasionally in the beginning, but started to reject it pretty quickly (4 months). I plan to offer it to LO2 for sure, because if it can be helpful in soothing her I'm all over that.

LO1 had one, but never really cared for it or grew attached, however my rule is as soon as they get teeth the pacifier goes away (when I took LO1s away.) I plan on doing the same for LO2.

LO1 didn't take one, and like others, I was glad to not have to worry about breaking the habit. We did offer one to LO2, and she will take one, but she's not an addict. We mostly just use it to help her fall asleep but she doesn't suck on it all night long. I was happy to have another tool to help soothe her.

LO 1 never took one (but we tried!) and I was glad in the end, although other comfort items took the place. I would try with LO 2 if it helps to soothe, it wouldn't be ideal, but I would do it if it helped calm the baby.

good question!! LO1 never took one...or when she did, it was only for a little bit at a time and she never got attached, thankfully. It did come in handy some times, though. I'm really curious if we'll give in to giving LO2 one! I'd really rather not deal with the attachment issue.

LO1 didn't take it. LO2 does, and I prefer it because otherwise she would have her thumb in her mouth all the time - packs are easier to take away than thumbs

@lamariniere: They *do* have to work hard to keep them in their mouths! When E was in the Special Care nursery all week, our nurse gave us exercises to do with the pacifier to strengthen her mouth and suck reflex! Since she had trouble breathing, she wasn't using her mouth well.

E didn't breastfeed OR use her thumbs so she needed *something*!

LO1 took a paci, unwillingly for about 6 months. We mainly used it to help keep him from puking so much after every feed. He would suck on it for maybe 5 minutes and then be done. He gave it up on his own by 6 months.

LO2 had the same puking problem, but she REALLY didn't like the paci. She was done with it by 3 months.

One thing I have wondered about is the use of the Avent Soothie type of pacifiers. That was the only kind we used with my LOs and I wonder if they lost interest early because they really had to work to keep it in their mouths, whereas other types of pacis with more of a bulb shape can stay in the mouth without much effort.

As for teeth, my DS (4) has really straight teeth with no current dental problems and I definitely attribute some of that to limited paci use and some to genetics (I have naturally very straight teeth).

LO1 took a paci. We used it to help him sleep and to keep him from putting stuff he wasn't supposed to in his mouth. We actually just took them all away on Saturday (he's 2), and he's been doing great with out. Much less painful than we anticipated.

LO2 won't take one at all and I probably won't introduce one to her unless her sleep becomes just awful or something. It's kind of nice.

ETA: Now I just reread your question and it doesn't really apply to me! lol oops.

LO never took a pacifier. She came home from daycare with one clipped to her every day for months but I never saw it in her mouth. She also never sucker her thumb. I was her pacifier until we weaned.

I haven't decided what to do for LO2. Not that I got to decide with LO1.

I was thinking of posting the same question earlier today. I didn't offer one to J until she was a few months old, and by that point, she wasn't into it. While there have been a few times when I wished I could have given her one, overall, I've been glad we haven't had to wean her from it or deal with it in general. I'm debating using one with number two for maybe just a few months? Not sure though... I'm interested to read the responses.

We did with our second and it's become a nightmare! She loves it but even at 13 weeks she can't keep it in her mouth. Going to take it away soon because her sleep is horrendous and she's enjoying sucking on her hands (hopefully that'll be her new way to self soothe).

If your first LO never took a pacifier, did you bother with introducing them to subsequent LOs?

DD1 never really cared for a pacifier, and now I'm definitely glad bc we haven't had to fight the battle of giving it up. We did offer her one (maybe not enough to get her to care for it?), she was just never really into it. I'm debating about whether or not to even try to introduce any to LO2.

Oh I also don't know if pacifiers really affect teeth, but DD1's teeth have come in totally straight and perfect...And my husband actually pointed out to me that her teeth are probably so straight bc she never took a pacifier...He said his and his brother's baby teeth grew in at an angle because they were pacifier monsters and couldn't give it up. I don't know if that really affects it or not, but it made me think...
