@Mrs Hedgehog: we blocked off the stairs with a baby gate.

If you want to babyproof the banister, would something like this work?

Well, we replaced about 25 feet of wall and stair railing in our raised ranch, because I was concerned that the decorative ovals were too large and that my son would just slip through.

On the main living floor, we replaced it with a half wall and on the stairs, two spindles per stair.

Fortunately our stairs only have banisters halfway up, the rest is a Sheetrock hallway. We also have Sheetrock upstairs instead of a banister. But anyway, when I was a kid my mom used netting! It looked pretty terrible, but nowhere near as bad as plastic anything and you can just untie it when you feel comfortable doing so....

Our house was built in 1747, so we aren't to code either =o) We just gated the top and bottom and didn't do anything about the slats, though ours aren't that far apart. They are much closer, but they're short. Truthfully, if mine were that far apart, Id use the plastic sheeting or even a screen or lattice or something. I know you are concerned with the appearance, but once LO comes, you prob wont even care.

How do you babyproof the railing and banister? Our slats are technically out of code but we grandfathered in since the house was built in 1990. They are only 4-5 inches apart but still... We can't afford to redo the railing just yet so until then I want to make sure LO can't get her head, legs or arms stuck. I have seen plastic sheets but I am trying to avoid those. Ideas? Is it possible for them to still look decent or I stuck with cheap lattice or plastic?

We have a little bit of time since she isn't here yet so obviously not mobile. Just planning ahead.
