@swurlygurl: I actually just had this concersation with a friend as she ha an 18 month old and a newborn and wanted to get a second pump that she will likely just sell...She ended up getting another electric pump and has used it even though she had a perfectly fine one from before.

@Meltini: I imagine there could be people who would want to abuse the system and get free pumps to sell to make money off them? Since, ya know, they've already 'paid for them'.

I had to have a prescription to get mine, which was a *huge* PITA to get... My OB said that L's Ped had to give me the prescription because the pumped milk is for the baby, but then the insurance company said that my OB was the one that had to write the prescription because I was the one using the pump, not L. It took forever!

As others have said, why would you want to get a breast pump if you aren't nursing?

I got two pumps, one last year while I was pregnant, then I switched insurance for 2014 and got another one, but I'm still breastfeeding. The DME provider had to check if my insurance had a time limit (X months from birth) since C was 7 months at the time, but they didn't limit it. I actually just wanted a cheap manual pump for travel but somehow they lady on the phone talked me into another big double electric, which is great, but I don't need. I will probably end up donating it (which goes to @MamaMoose: 's point about inflating premiums... oops.) I don't know if they called my midwife practice for confirmation that I had a baby, to be honest.

I just emailed my insurance about this today and I have to get it from their durable medical equipment provider and I am only eligible within 30 days of my EDD or up to 1 year post partum.

@Aandmklover: I actually called and found out, not sure why they didn't ask for a prescription last year, but they were supposed to!

@mrsjyw: interesting. I just helped my friend figure out her free pump (yesterday) and she has to have a prescription. I also remember needing one when I got my pump 2 years ago.

I'm sure all insurance and medical supply places are different. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

I'm with PP, I don't see the point of getting a pump now if you don't need it just because you can? I would wait until you do become pregnant and get a new one then if you feel it's necessary.

Why would you get a pump if you don't need it?

I certainly hope not. Providing free annual pumps to women regardless of whether not they had another baby seems like just the type of huge waste of money that leads to inflated health insurance premiums.

I believe you have to have a prescription. I think getting a doctor to issue one if you are not expecting may be a challenge.

I had my 38 week visit today and the nurse said she was going to put in the paperwork for my free pump now because my insurance wont accept the claim until i am 38 weeks.

Not sure if my insurance provides one annually, probably only if i am pregnant.

can you order one w/o being pregnant?

I received a generic Medela dbl electric that I got in early 2013... there was no requirement with our insurance that i had to be X days away from delivery, etc.

Contemplating if I should try to order one this year, even tho I'm not pregnant.
