I made the "mistake" once as a nanny of telling the mom about the baby hitting a milestone and she was heart broken so I decided not to tell anymore. This became a problem when another family had a toddler who started walking for me a good trip weeks before he did it for his parents (they were in the middle of a very trying family situation on top of work.) Finally the 6 year old got him to walk while the mom was nearby. The 6 year old was sooo excited to be a part of the "first steps" that it made all my guilt over it worth it.

Yeah, I don't think they told us either. One day I was picking DD up from daycare, and she took a few steps toward me away from a table. At that point we hadn't witnessed any first steps yet, so I was totally shocked. Her teachers didn't seem surprised in the slightest, so I asked them how long she had been taking steps at school. They just said "oh, we assumed she had been walking for a while". Ugh. I was so sad I had missed her first steps, but pretty excited that she was walking!

our nanny tells us milestones! it seems like she is as excited about them as we are. she texted me a picture of poop in a potty the other day, haha.

maybe daycare doesn't realize its a milestone and they think that your kids have been doing whatever milestone it is for awhile now, or that the parents have seen it already.

My inlaws have E 3 days per week and they can't wait to tell me when she has done something new. I don't mind though.... Its just nice to hear what she has been up to. Nursery have never mentioned a milestone to us in the ten months she has been going there.

As a former nanny, I was instructed never to tell her mom. I would tell her dad & he would try to set up a situation where the mom could see her do it "for the first time". Which is only a shame because I caught her crawling for the first time on video!

I prefer to know. I wouldn't want to worry about a delay and then find out she's been doing it all along.

We are past all that really now. He is walking and talking etc. I didn't tell them either way, and they never mentioned any milestones to me, but I wouldn't have minded them telling me.

I don't care if it happens at daycare, T usually tells me "she's close". It still counts for me, if it's the first time for ME to see it. I still want to know :)

Our two kids were with a nanny and then in daycare. In all that time, our nanny and our daycare teachers were never the first people to see our kids sit up, crawl, stand or walk. We managed to catch all of these firsts at home ourselves.

That seemed a little suspicious to me, so I compared notes with the other parents in the daycare. They said that the teachers never mentioned any milestones to them either! The odds of that happening must be 1,000,000:1!! I'm pretty sure that our nanny and our daycare teachers both saw plenty of milestones, but just never mentioned it to us... if so, I gotta say that's probably a smart way to minimize parenting guilt! I personally wouldn't care either way though.

Does your daycare/nanny/sitter tell you about milestones? Do you want to hear about them, or would you rather catch these "firsts" yourself - even if they're not true firsts?
