Buying puzzles at the thrift store is a good suggestion! I'm having this problem too with my son. He can put together the jumbo 25-30 piece floor puzzles in no time, so I want to find him something more challenging, but it does get expensive, plus I don't have a lot of storage for all his puzzles.

Our daughter blew through little kid puzzles like nothing too. We accidentally bought her a set of Disney puzzles that had the tiniest pieces (about age 3) and she LOVED them! 150+ pieces. We all sit at the table and work on them. She still can't do any of the big ones all alone (age 5; 200+ pieces) but she'll sit and work on them for a ridiculously long time.

We get these box sets that have 10 puzzles in them. They're usually about $20 and there's like 10 puzzles in it. We often put the smaller ones in my purse to keep her busy at restaurants and other people's houses (we hang out with a lot of childless people...)

@Mrs Panda: I browsed a few apps and they all seem to avoid having the kid rotate pieces, which seems like it's missing a big skill. Do you have any in particular that you've tried and liked?

@jhd: 48 piece, that's what I was thinking the dollar store had. We don't have over 24 piece ones so I couldn't think of the next piece size up.

@JennyPenny: we have found everything from a set of four six piece puzzles, to sets of 12 piece puzzles, and 24 piece puzzles at our dollar store. LO was puzzle crazy for a while after Christmas. He settled down some and is playing with a lot of the same ones. He's not quite ready to do a 48 piece independently but we tried one together. Check your dollar store and if it's anything like ours the stock probably changes frequently.

Do you know any other mums with whom you could do some toy swaps?
I was going to suggest making one out of cardboard as well but it seems like a pain to do all that cutting!

@Bao: Right now he's blowing through 25-30 piece sets. I would (think/hope) we've got another 6 months at least before he could do 100 piece sets, but if he keeps improving at the rate he has been who knows

DS has recently gotten really into puzzles. We got him some new ones at Christmas and those got too easy for him, so we got him some harder ones a few weeks ago, and those are too easy now too. He seems to be content doing the same one over and over even though it takes very little time, but I'd like to keep challenging him. Also, its great independent play when it takes a while ;)

But I feel like if I keep buying new puzzles I'm going to a) go broke and b) go insane from all the new toys. Does anyone have a solution? I did some quick googling and haven't found any evidence of puzzle check outs at our library or a "netflix of kid's puzzles". Wondering if anyone knows of anything I'm missing or has other creative solutions...
