I tell her I have my period. She knows it means there's blood coming out of my vagina but I'm not hurt. I haven't explained why it happens but told her that only girls get their periods. She knows what tampons are. She asked me if it hurts to put a tampon in. Ha. I probably wouldn't say as much about it if she was a boy.

I just say "mommy needs privacy" and closes the door. We've tried to teach bathroom time is private time and it works usually. She associates blood with pain so I can only imagine how she would freak out if she saw it.

Well I have an IUD so I don't have a period anymore. But regardless, LO is 18 mo and could not care less what is going on with me and the toilet. She is mostly concerned with trying to unspool the toilet paper like a cat, laying on the floor to look under the door, or some other random thing.

I tell her I'm bleeding but that it's okay and that once she is a woman, she will bleed too.

It's a little weird to have such a captive audience when I'm in the bathroom.

Ha, I've recently tried to figure this out. I use a Diva Cup, and she always looks inquisitively when I'm trying to take it out/put it back in. I am still working on my story, since she's only 19 months, but I tell her, "when you get bigger, blood comes out of your body once a month. It can be messy, but it's not scary. I'll teach you about it when you get older." or something to that effect.

@birdofafeather: HA!

@oliviaoblivia: R saw my pads in the hospital when she was going to the bathroom and DH told her that "mama's vagina hurts" from having baby sister. she's asked me every day if my vagina still hurts. :D

I don't know what to say so I usually try to distract him! Once he said "mama's peepee red" but didn't seem disturbed, so I just agreed and flushed and changed the subject.

I felt weird too! But I just told her that a period is something that a woman has when she is not pregnant. A tampon is something that stops the blood from coming out.

I quickly remove the pad and trash it. DS is 2 and hasn't asked yet as I try not to let him see, but he does call the clean pad I put on "diaper". Which I guess is kind of right. lol

@T.H.O.U.: well my girl is only 1.5 so she's just following her brother wherever he goes. My son has regular nosebleeds so blood doesn't freak him out. I'm sure he'll have more questions later on!

It's the only time I really keep him out of the bathroom with me. Honestly, I think it would be scary for him. He associates blood with being hurt and gets really scared if me or his father gets hurt, so I try to hide it as best I can.

Postpartum LO though I was wearing diapers, haha. She's only 2 so she's more interested in the tampon than anything else. I just tell her it's a tampon when she asks and tell her that when she gets big she will use them too.

@T.H.O.U.: I tell them I'm bleeding because I have my period and that's why I use the pads. My son insists on looking in the bowl after I do anything, he will actually cry if I flush before he gets a peek. Lttle kids are so gross.

I've only had a handful of periods in the past four years. Fortunately they happened when DD1 was under 15 months and didn't know what was going on. I wonder how she'll react to my postpartum bleeding in a couple months.

I told my 3 year old it's (sanitary products) something mommies use sometimes...she asked when, and I said "when there isn't a baby in Mommy's belly". She was satisfied with that.

My children are the same age and I also tell them. I'm 36 weeks pregnant though so it only comes up when my DD asks what my tampons are/why do I use them. I agree that it feels odd!

What do you tell them when it's period time?! My 3 year old boy and 1.5 year old girl NEVER let me go to the bathroom alone. I just tell them what it is but I feel weird doing it! What do you tell your LOs?
