We quit swaddling cold turkey at 12 weeks because she kept waking up just so she could suck her thumb. Now I can see if she wakes up, she'll often just suck her thumb for a minute or two and fall back asleep. It was about 2-3 nights of more frequent wake ups when she would startle, but after that, we were good!

My daughter started sleeping all night when she found her fingers at 7 weeks. We just started swaddling with one arm out. Worked beautifully.

Thank you all-we might try the hand up at first and see how he fares if he seems like he is getting upset not being able to get to them.

I would stop swaddling as soon as it's apparent that your child sleeps better unswaddled. For every child that time is different. For our baby, she was ready to go unswaddled at 3.5 months, but I know others who swaddled for much more (or less) time.

one i realized she found her hand, i slowly started swaddling one hand up (sometimes she was okay and sometimes she wasn't, so i played it by ear). then after a while, she got pissed when she couldn't suck on her fingers, so we swaddled both hands up by her face and then slowly went to only swaddle around the body and then loose swaddle, then sleep sacks only. this was all around 4 months and it took a couple weeks maybe?

read his cues but the finger sucking was a game changer for us!

@tlcbaby: We swaddled with her little had up towards her face and then we eventually swaddled with one arm out.
Swaddled and contained, but still self soothing- best of both worlds!

@Smurfette: He doesn't seem to have any interest in rolling from his back. It's funny how freedom to move and get where you want to go is such a basic need!

@tlcbaby: R is almost 5 weeks and has only done that a couple times. Course we lay her on her back and she is on her tummy in 2 seconds. But she isn't getting the tummy to back, unless in her crib. She seems to find magical rolling powers in there.

@Smurfette: Yeah, I told him to stop. I am not ready for all that. He isn't listening, though. I meant to say he is rolling from his stomach to back, I think I said it backwards.

@Smurfette: He sporadically rolls back to front, but he is in the rock n play at night still so he isn't going anywhere. :) His night sleep is good so I think you are right - I don't want to mess that up!

@tlcbaby: If he is sleeping good at night I would hate to mess with it if he is. He isn't near rolling yet, right? So you don't have to start to unswaddle yet.

@Smurfette: No, I don't always swaddle him for naps and he will get it when he wakes up from a nap. At night I always swaddle so he hasn't done it yet at night or been able to get his arm out.

He will be eight weeks tomorrow.

A just found his thumb and it is his new best friend. Instead of crying when he wakes up from naps he just finds his thumb and sucks away until I come get him. Should I maybe keep one arm out so he can find it at night if he wants to or keep swaddling?
