We're 2 weeks in to gentle, slow potty training and LO always has the option to wear a diaper if he wants. (And he does diapers for naps and overnight.) So far he's opted for the diaper only one day and asked to go back to undies the next day.

We were doing frequent parent-initiated potty visits in the beginning and it was clearly stressing him out. We almost completely stopped now: we ask him at transition times but he chooses, and we change wet undies in the bathroom and he normally opts to sit on the potty then too. So we just change a lot of wet undies as he is learning how it works. (We keep him in undies on trips out; he doesn't pee enough to get something other than his clothes wet, so we just bring extra clothes and change when needed.)

I would also let her use a pull up.

We are also taking the slow approach. Some days, LO wants to use the potty much of the day. Other days, she wants a diaper. I just go with it and figure she will decide to ditch the diapers when she's ready. It also makes me easier for me not to have to worry when we are out. I read an Angela Lansbury article abt training not being necessary that made me feel better abt out approach :)

We have a similar situation - LO wakes up from naps dry but can be super cranky post nap and refuse to use the potty. I just leave the pull up on until she snaps out of it and take it off once she decides to use the potty. She always ends up keeping the pull up dry and having a huge pee like 30 mins later - i think she is just cranky and tired and doesn't want me to boss her around  So long story short, I'd let her keep it on if she wants.

Take my advice with a grain of salt because I know nothing and we are far off... But I think in evenings you could just put her in a pull up and offer her to try to use bathroom at your normal times without pushing the issue. Your approach/attitude sound perfect!

@Cherrybee: Then I would just follow her cues and use a pull up on the nights she fights sitting on the potty but still ask her occasionally if she needs to use it.

@AprilFool: I don't mind if she stays in nappies for another 6 months! I just want to do right by her and she really wants to to wee like a big girl.

Yes I probably would but it depends how fast you want her trained. We are taking the slowest approach ever so a pull up at night wouldn't worry me.

..... do you put a nappy (diaper) on them?

We are only on day four of gentle potty training. We've been doing just underwear in the house and pull ups when we go out. Today, E stayed dry all morning, even though we were out and about, and even did one wee in a public toilet (in her little plastic potty). She did really well this afternoon at a play date (three potty wees and two accidents in her pull up). But her success is dependent on us prompting her to try every 15mins or so.

This evening, she was just so over it. I had her in underwear but she kept refusing to sit on the potty. Then, two minutes after she had tried (but no wee came), she weed all over the floor.

She has recently given up her last nap and is so tired by 5pm. Would you cut her some slack and put a pull up on her in the evenings? Or do you think that might cause confusion / bad habits? I am conscious that I don't want to turn her off the idea of using the potty by pushing it too hard when she says no...but I don't want to give the message that we wear pull ups when we don't feel like using the potty.....
