I'm montessori certified and teach in he center my son attends (he's 2) and I think you're approach of semi-Montessori at home is perfect! You have to do what works the best for your own family & household. My son learned to use an open cup at school at like, 10 months old & we just started open cups full time at home at 22 months. We did the Montessori style room & have his toys on low shelving, but I don't call it work and it's not montessori approved materials (lots of plastic crap over here!) I like for him to walk a lot of places & do things for himself, but we still carry him sometimes and hang up his coat from time to time.
I don't at all think a household has to be 100% Montessori for the school program to be beneficial (although a certain amount of consistency helps)

I wouldn't worry about it unless it interfered with his learning and development at school.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: they are usually pretty good at identifying readiness... Sounds like they do more of a blend. You can check out my old blog post on toilet training vs learning if you want to better understand the difference :)

@Mrs. Jacks: my school told me if he is showing signs of potty readiness they would have him in cotton undies full-time within one week! Not sure if that is more toilet learning or training. He just turned two so I was a little surprised to hear that they took things that fast! Honestly he is more ready than I am so I am looking forward to their enthusiasm.

@Mrs. Jacks: we did re-do his room in a montessori style when he transitioned from his crib, but he was in a crib from six months onward. Now he's in a floor bed and we don't have a dresser in his room but that was really just primarily for safety reasons (no big people furniture means fewer things to have to anchor to the wall).

I'm definitely open to incorporating more into our home! We didn't put locks on the cabinet but that was mostly because getting my husband to do that sort of miserable chore is such a struggle! It was easier just to put the breakables and medicine up high.

We got an enamel coated metal coffee cup (think camping) from goodwill for about a quarter that he can use to practice open cup drinking without having to worry about drops. When we use glass we use ball jars, which to me are pretty sturdy but when I think to use it, I grab the metal cup.

My girls go to Montessori school and we're pretty consistent. We've "Montessori-ed" our home and try to follow most of the rules. We skimp on the getting dressed by yourself (takes way too long!) and we did a ton of baby wearing (only recently stopped). Our little ones drink out of real glasses at school and we refuse to do that at home as I feel like my little barefoot girls would be too at risk!

FWIW- I think Montessori discipline is easier than other methods and toilet learning was easier than toilet training.

@katsupgirl: so far the only thing they've insisted on is that we potty train him at home when they are training at school.

Ours is a public program so they may feel like they can't really insist on things like a private one might!

I was doing some research on schools and one of the Waldorf ones had it in the parent handbook what rules to follow at home. Seems a bit much. I like a lot of the Montessori principles but a family has to use what works for them best at home.

She's starting one next month. I've always tried to make it Montessori style as much as possible, but I like her crib and I carry her, and we don't follow everything perfectly. I like your reasoning for not doing it (family centered, enjoying the less order)

Like, if they use open cups only do you also use open cups only?

If they don't allow carrying, do you carry into places on the weekend?

Personally I think montessori is a beautiful thing but I'm not worried about LO using a straw cup on the weekend. He uses a jelly jar at home fairly frequently (this is primarily due to laziness as I hate washing his straw cups) so he's ok with one but we do use a straw cup a lot too. As for carrying I really don't have a philosophy on this. I understand why they do it, but for me it isn't something I'm passionate about bringing into our life outside of school. Sometimes I carry him.

He is just starting so I guess this is something we will decide on a case by case basis. My feeling TBH is that our life is less 'perfect' than montessori. I like the structure of montessori and am thankful he gets exposed to the ideas in an environment that is created and staffed for the purpose, but home is just more chaotic and less centered on LO, more centered on us as a family and our needs/limits. I don't think we have to always be in montessori mode at home in order for school to be a good experience for the child. But then again I am not trained so what do I know? Lol! I just know my own limits as a mom.
