About a week</p> <p>Did your LO turn out to have allergies? Yes, tree nuts and peanuts.</p> <p>Did you insurance pay for the testing? Yes</p> <p>For food allergies, do they test for about 10-15 things?? I know they don't test for everything, but just wondering how many they include in the regular panel? We tested for peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish. </p> <p>We tested at age 2 for DD1. It was just a skin test. We didn't do the blood draw until she was 3. She handled the blood draw at 3 very well because she understood what was going on and why we needed to do it. </p> <p>DD2 is going to need testing, too, but we're waiting until 2 years as well. So far we do not feed her any dairy, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, or shellfish. I have been giving her small amounts of dairy and eggs periodically, but she gets a rash around her mouth and neck right away so I know that she hasn't outgrown that yet. I won't give her any tree nuts, peanuts, or shellfish until we've had the allergy test. He goes back every 6-9 months for more tests to watch and see if his numbers have gone up or down, letting us know if an allergy is getting worse or possibly going away. We also had a skin prick test done when he first saw an allergist at 2 years old.</p> <p>Babies can be tested as soon as 6 months old if there is concern at an early age. Tests may not be accurate though. I think it's limited to a skin prick test, but I'm not sure about the details. Unfortunately the test does require two vials of blood, and it's not easy. Our doctor recommended going to the local children's hospital to get LO's blood drawn since they are more experienced with babies and toddlers. DH sat in the chair and held onto LO while they drew his blood. We told them it was for a one year old and they said that they will have two nurses hold him down! [cue us freaking out] So we are thinking to maybe wait until we get back to the US in a few months... That sounds like a lot to deal with! I definitely hope your LO outgrows his allergies. I have an anaphylactic reaction to sulfites, so I am always reading labels. I'm also allergic to avocados and tree nuts. I know that it's a pain to manage food allergies, but you're right that there are lots of options and alternatives.</p> <p>Well, it looks like good news for us. I logged onto the "patient portal" via the pediatrician's website and my LOs results were already there! As far as I can tell, all her results appear negative. I haven't talked to her doctor yet though. </p> <p>I guess she had a reaction to something other than the egg she ate that day! She had a cold at the time, and the ped did mention that the hives etc. could have been viral. Hopefully she won't develop any allergies as she gets older, but so far, looks like good news!</p> <p>@Baby Boy Mom: I'll let you know how much it ends up costing. We tested for the common allergens, and DS1 is allergic to eggs, dairy, and peanuts. Later he had a skin prick test, which confirmed the allergies we knew about and added dust mites to our list. He had a follow up 6 months later with another blood test, which showed improvement with dairy. In 3 months we will be back to see if he can have heated dairy in a muffin. </p> <p>While allergies can be overwhelming at first, there are a lot of options and alternatives now. Chances are also high that kids can outgrow many of the common allergies. It was both the ige and igg test. ( short term and long term reaction). It tested for the 199 most common allergies- food and environmental. They ordered the food allergy one because she got a swelling/rash/hives after eating eggs (and a few other things) one morning. She is also constantly congested... not sure if it is just daycare germs or whether it's allergies. I have lots of allergies myself (food and environmental), so I wouldn't be surprised if she had some, though obviously I'm hoping she doesn't. I'm most nervous she'll be really allergic to eggs or allergic to our dog or something! I'm looking forward to getting the results back so we'll have a better idea of where we stand. </p>
