Do you space out solids and formula when you work on it? My Lo always ate really small volumes so I had to make sure bottles were not bear mealtimes, so breakfast was like an hour and a half after wake-up (plus bottle). Also if they seem to do worse at sleep, maybe you can work on solids in the morning and after nap, but don't add in dinner for awhile? I'm just trying help problem shoot! Feeding was tr most stressful thing in our house for ages, but it all worked out eventually. We did switch to WCM at age 1 (actually first pediasure which was a disaster, then WCM).

We waited until 13 months to really start the whole milk since he was so slow to take to solids and we wanted to make sure he was getting the nutrition he needed. He still nurses twice a day even now at 14 months and we slowly transitioned him to whole milk during the day. I was a bit scared it'd affect his growth but he's doing fine.

@twodoghouse: poor babies :( I feel the same way with Fiona a lot. Because of course what she wants most is whatever I have. Which mostly are things she can't eat due to the MSPI. And I feel like such a jerk all "here kid, eat some black beans and corn and peppers while I have those things smothered in a cheesy quesadilla of deliciousness" and she's staring at my food like.... WANT.

@Mae: Um, yes yes yes to everything you wrote. I feel the same way. Some day they will eat normally, right? Right? Tonight they were crying and reaching toward our dinner like hey! Give me some! We let them eat a little avocado, but even that will probably cause them pain in the middle of the night. It's just sad when they obviously want to eat but it wreaks so much havoc on their systems.

@twodoghouse: Yea. I feel you on all accounts. I sort of hate how docs always ask about "concerns".... because like, I have questions. Doesn't necessarily mean I'm concerned, but like... what the hell do I know about babies (nothing) lol. So sometimes I just have a list of things and I'm like.. normal? not normal? cool. But then I feel crazy for asking too many questions. :) Also it is sort of frustrating when our LOs aren't quite "on track".... for so long through our bottle issues I had this 12 mo mark set in my min like if we could make it to then we could get her off bottles and on real food. And now that is basically.... not at all going to happen. My new "goal" or point in my mind is that I'm sort of hoping by 18 mo we will at LEAST be down to just wakeup and bedtime bottles, if not off them all together. But in the grand scheme of things... we'll all get through. Our kids will eat food. Some day. :)

@twodoghouse: To put it simply it is basically a food allergy in the esophagus but can get misdiagnosed as reflux, which is what made me think of it. I'm glad you decided to pursue further evaluation. Hopefully a little more time is all they need, but it sounds like your GI has a plan in place if that doesn't work out to figure out what is going on. Good luck!

Eta: you never know! My LO went from nothing to eating non-stop all day! Essentially overnight. It was like she and her body was just one day ready.

@anbanan15: We've only just now started with the GI because the intolerance of solids (sleep issues, mostly) got so frustrating that I felt like we needed to go beyond our regular ped. We are going to try starting up solids again around their first birthday to see if they just need more time for their GI tract to mature. Our GI doctor said he's seen this before with twins, although I think that was mostly in the case of preemie twins and mine were 38 weeks. Anyway, after that we are going to move forward with testing (upper GI scope to start) for a motility issue. I don't know anything about the esophagitis that you mentioned, but will look it up! Thanks!

@Mae: That makes a lot of sense. At our last ped appt I wanted to discuss more of this but she sort of brushed me off and said we'd talk at their 12 month appt. Our well check appts take so long with two (2.5-3 hrs all told) that I sometimes feel like our ped just wants to be done with me by the end and not goi to things she doesn't feel are pertinent. But their 12 month appt is a couple weeks after their birthday, so Im anxious to know what will come of that. So much depends on whether they start tolerating solids on their own or if we will have to proceed with testing. I should probably prepare with toddler formula, though, as they obviously aren't going to be magically eating 3 meals a day even if they start tolerating solids all of a sudden!

So we don't have these issues obviously but just one little comment on the transition to milk, because we have talked to our doc about how that works with Fiona's slow start to solids (although we wouldn't be going right to WCM anyways because of the MSPI...). Anyways. Her opinion is that whole milk is not a meal replacement item like breast milk or formula. It is a caloric beverage. She does not recommend trying to replace bottles with WCM until LOs are getting a pretty big % of their calories from solid food. I think we'll be a bit late on weaning totally off of bottles since Fiona still doesn't eat all that much of solid food, so at 12 mo we will probably switch her to nutramigen toddler formula.

@twodoghouse: eh my first is doing well. My second is a mystery. Feeding wise, as far as eating and being able to tolerate everything she is doing great. Loves to eat!!! Eats more than my (almost) 4 year old!

Hmm have they looked at eosinophilic esophagitis? When you said reflux it made me think of that (we had to rule it out with both of mine at some point). Have you tried working with a SLP or dietician/nutritionalist for ideas? Sometimes thinking outside the box is all it takes. Try looking into some FB groups too. you might find more help there.

A real diagnosis unfortunately does not always happen, but it is so much easier for us mamas when we can put a name to whatever it is and then research the heck out of it. I hope you find one.

@anbanan15: Thanks so much for sharing your experience! It sounds like your really went through the ringer with your LOs but things are going well now. That gives me hope! We are still in the "figure things out" phase. At this point I'd just feel better with a real diagnosis. We were operating under the assumption that it was reflux up till this point, but now we're not even sure about that. Thanks again for sharing what you've been through. It is nice to know we aren't alone here!

My first had FPIES and couldn't tolerate anything until around 14 mo and then it was a slow process of trial and error, adding maybe one food a month, until he outgrew FPIES. I breastfed him until 21 mo on a limited diet (he self weaned) and had enough BM saved up that he has it until 25 mo. At around 14 mo we started introducing 1 box Splash per day, which is a ready made hypoallergenic nutritionally complete formula for kids over 1 with severe food allergies and GI issues. We added this to replace calories and nutrients missing from solids. He still nursed around the clock like a young baby. After he stopped nursing he got 2 boxes per day in addition to the frozen BM I had. Between 2.5-3 he started to eat a regular diet and has since.

My second was EBF until 11 mo. Everything I ate caused blood in her stools and chronic diarrhea (we thought she had FPIES too, but turns out she has something else that we are still trying to work up). I nursed her while eating the same 3 foods for a year. We tried to introduce an elemental formula for added calories but she wouldn't drink it. We were getting to the point of feeding tube or else, but she is also neutropenic and a feeding tube was a less than ideal option for her hematologist, so we decided to try solids as a last ditch effort. Amazingly she could suddenly tolerate them and the foods in my diet! She has been eating anything she wants since (16 mo now), but is still mostly breastfed. We have introduced whole cow's milk recently and she also drinks water. We went right to a straw cup with those and she has been doing great with them. I have a TON of BM saved for her as well but she will not touch any of it.

Not sure if they really helps answer your question, but you are not alone in this. Others have also been down this road. You will find what works for you and your LO's and also figure out those missing pieces to that puzzle you are currently working on.

If your LO had issues with solids, when did you start weaning from formula/breastmilk bottles? Did you still start whole milk (or another kind of milk?) at a year?

My almost 11 month old LOs have trouble digesting solids (possible delayed gastric emptying although they have not been through testing yet). They have plenty of interest, but their systems can't handle very much at a time. My kids nurse and take formula bottles. I plan to nurse until they seem ready to stop, but I'd love to be done with the hassle of making formula bottles. However, right now they get 99% of their nutrition from the formula. Without solids, I doubt we'd be able to get them off formula.

We are working with a GI now and will follow his lead regarding bottles, whole cow's milk, etc. but I'm wondering what others experienced. So when did you transition to whole milk/off bottles with youR LO and what kind of issues did they have with solids?
