@autumnlove: Hi! Yeah, it stinks. I was on our school district's site. When the time comes, we are going to consider trying to get the private school associated with our church to admit LO young, but that probably won't work. Or we'll homeschool for kindergarten. Or we may just let it go and let her have another year of fun. :)

@autumnlove: Exact same boat here with our Christmas Eve birthday. We'll leave her in preschool another year and may homeschool her as an early kindergarten, then challenge to get her into 1st grade. She has always been around other kids, so I am not worried about the socialization.

I looked it up and our current preschool/daycare has a PreK-5 class for LOs who are 5 by Dec 31 so that is what we will likely do!

DD was born 12/31 so we will have to wait. Our county ( I think our state actually) doesn't even give and option to have kids test into it if they miss the cutoff.

My DS's bday is 10 days after cutoff. We plan to go according to the schedule so that he is oldest in his class. For now, anyway we still have 2 years to go.

Our district's cutoff is either 8/31 or 9/1, I can't remember which. DD was born 12/4 so she definitely misses the cutoff. Honestly, I hadn't given this any thought at all before today, since she's not even one yet...I think we'll wait and see what she seems to needs and is ready for when it gets closer. If we decide to be one and done, private school is a possibility, otherwise I'm guessing she'll just stay in a curriculum-based daycare or preschool for that year... Hmm.

LO was born on September 7th and the cutoff is September 1st. He's just one now, so it's pretty far in the future.

We will definitely consider having him try to test in when he's almost five. His dad and I were always advanced in school and wish we had been challenged more, so we don't want him to be bored. On the other hand, at this point he is very physical and high energy - if he would get more exercise in preschool or pre-kindergarten, that would be an important consideration for me.

We live in a big city where there are plenty of options, so I'm sure we'll be able to find something for him to do that year.

Ds is a Nov baby and our state has a gradual schedule of cutoffs. I think for the year he is kindergarten eligible is when it will finally be Sept 1. Parents can request in writing that their be enrolled early if their bdays are by 12/31. We're probably going to do that if DS seems ready

Even though my son's birthday is not affected (our cut off is Dec 31), if we feel that he's not ready to go to public K, our back up plan is to put him into a 5s program where he is currently enrolled in the 4s program.

Cut off is Aug 31 but you can have your LO evaluated if they were born before Sept 30. LO has an Oct birthday so that's a no go.

I imagine she will go to preschool. The preschool she attends now at 10 mo for part time daycare goes up to 5 year olds though this discussion makes me curious about whether it is a separate class or the same Pre-K 4 year olds are in - basically if she would "repeat" a year. I know there are private schools around here that offer essentially transitional K - Pre-K for young 5 year olds who didn't make the cut off. But public schools only have Head Start.

Even though we will pay for preschool longer I am glad she will be one of the older in her class.

@autumnlove: cut off is 9/1 here too and LO's birthday is 11/11. They make some exceptions where you can test your child in but that cut off is 10/15 so we just barely miss that too. My LO is ahead developmentally (can read simple words, recognize a ton of sight words, etc), thrives in a classroom environment and is physically bigger than average - everyone thought she was turning 3 last year when she was turning 2 and she's taller than a lot of her friends that are a full year older than her. So I feel like putting her in with her cohort would not be stimulating for her. So our solution at this time is that she's going to Montessori school where it's a mixed age group and kids are encouraged to learn at their own pace. I think the public schools stop restricting them by age after 2nd grade so we might look at transitioning her to public school at that time

When is the deadline and what will your LO do the year that they aren't eligible for real Kindergarten?

LO has a late December birthday and I always assumed she would go to a transitional K through our district. She will not be eligible for K because the cut off is 9/1 but she is also not eligible for transitional K because the cut off is 12/2. So I guess I will need to look for other options....good thing I have lots of time to think about it!
