Love Ethan, my LO's name! I only know of 2 other boys with that name, and they're much older (and I only know of them through facebook) so even if it's a top ten name, I don't actually hear it often in the area.

Jack is my #1 if this kid is a boy (my Uncle was a Jack, and I happen to love it) but DH is dismissing it just because it's too "popular". That just stinks since we'd choose it for its meaning and not just because it's trendy.

I've got till May to convince him otherwise! Unless it's a girl...

My LO's name isn't top 10 but she started ballet class this weekend and the only repeat name in the class: Eloise! There's a few top 10 namers in there too, but yeah, Eloise is the one where more than 1 kid has the same name! So, pick whatever name you love, you can't guarantee anything.

I think top ten names are just in general the trend. Not necessarily meaning there's a lot of those names IRL. My LO has a top ten name but we have never personally met another girl with the same name directly. Although one of these days, she will prob deal with having a same name in her class.

Funny story, but there's like 4 Harper's in her ballet class. And two of them even have the same initial. The teacher calls that name and like half the kids turn around

I have a top 5 name, and it annoyed me in school that I was *always* Sarah D. But I love my name, and wouldn't want to be anything else. I wouldn't mind using a top 10 name, especially if I love it, but D was also a top 5 name, and it was a non-negotiable criteria for him that the names we chose be out of the top 10.

And FWIW...there are *3* little girls in E's class called Addie (Addison, Addylyn and Adelaide, I think), and I don't think any of those names are in the top 10 :silly:

@2littlepumpkins: I have a very common / popular name and I always think it is nifty when I meet other people who have it and have had a few friends and classmates with it throughout my life. If you love the name then use it. It's your child and they are special whether or not other kids have the same name!

My friend picked a name in the 300s because she loves it and loved that it wasn't common. Then another boy one street over had the same name!

My sons name isn't even in the top 1,000, but a few girls names that sound similar are really climbing up the charts.

No guarantees. Go with one you love!

From someone who has a top 5 name from the decade they were born: it sucked being one of 5 in kindergarten.

However if you look at the numbers these days, there is much more variety in naming trends and there are less babies per name as opposed to 25-30 years ago.

I was very against naming my LO a top 10 name and I didn't, she's in the 300 range. For my next LO though I wouldn't care.

My husband has a top 10 name - it's been in the top 10 for like the last 20+ years. It's never bothered him.

I'd rather choose a name that I really love even if it's popular than a name that's uncommon that I don't love as much.

Also, there's just no guarantee with names - you can choose a name that's outside the top 100 and in 5-10 years it could be in the top 10 (like if it's a name used in a book, show, movie, celebrity, etc). So my thought is to just choose a name that you love

@2littlepumpkins: My DD's name is top 10 and it has been fine. It was literally the only name we could agree on although I wished for something less popular--I just love her name! We definitely know of other people with her name, like an older sister of one of her classmates, a few colleagues' girls, but no one in our day to day life.

We just had DS and his name is top 20. I was much less worried this time because of our experience and again we know of people with this name but no one too close so far.

I say if you love the name you shouldn't worry too much about popularity!

He just turned 3 and so far not an issue. Yesterday he played at the park with a boy with the same name but he went by his full name while we use a nickname. We really have only come across a handful of kids with his name. There is one in his preschool class on opposite days so they haven't even met.

My DDs name has risen in popularity in recent years, I think it is now in the top 10. It didn't bother me because I've loved the name forever, and even though it's super popular overall (I've only met a couple other people with the same name), it's not popular in my area. I'm a teacher and have never taught anyone with her name, so that was a good guide for me!

My son is half French and his name is hugely popular in France. It has been in the top 10 for a decade, but it is also a very classic name. In France, we know a number of kids with his name, and you hear it on the playground and out and about all the time, but it doesn't bother any of us. I picked his name out years before I even met my husband, so I definitely love it, popular or not!

@2littlepumpkins: chiming in to say I feel your pain. People having babies right now just have really good taste because many of our favorite names are super popular. C's name is around 100 which is great- I've met 3 others so far, total. But having a harder time for or second.

How has it been?

How did you feel about popular names and do you have any regrets?

I'm talking like top 10 names. We are having a really hard time with a boy name and anything we agree on ends up being pretty popular, with James and Ethan being the current faves. Our daughters name is outside the top 100 but not unheard of.
