@yin: That's awesome that at 3.5, your LO understands his allergies and is careful! Did you do anything in particular to make sure he was aware and vigilant about it himself? Xander's only 2, but I don't think he really understands that he's allergic to milk...

LO1 was almost 3.5 years old when he started preschool. He is allergic to dairy, eggs, and peanuts and attends a nut free school. He eats snacks at the same table with the rest of his classmates. He understands his allergies, and he trusts the teachers to check the ingredients for him. He is very careful and even double checks with us before trying foods.

LO2 is allergic to way more foods (dairy, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soy, some seeds, and possibly salmon). I SAH and will most likely put him in preschool at 3/4 when he is better able to understand his food allergies.

When we suspected LO had allergies (before she got tested), she sat at the same table but the teachers just monitored her really closely. We are lucky she has no real allergies though because I'm pretty sure she ate things off the floor a few times. There is a child in LO's class with true allergies and I'm pretty sure he sits with the others when their meals don't contain his allergens but I'm not sure if they separate him otherwise. His allergies are nuts and eggs, and our daycare is nut-free anyway, so they are just avoiding eggs.

@MoreCoffee: I'm a little worried about when he moves to the next room. The room he's in now, they still use sippy cups, but the next room, he'll be using a regular cup, so I feel like there's more of a chance of him being exposed to milk... I don't know if they'll do anything differently in that room or not.

@Adira: I always worried about the food throwing issue! I've seen the kids during meal times and the food is *everywhere*. We've had a few instances of hives from contact but thankfully never anything severe.

In the 12-18 month room DS sat in a high chair while the other kids sat at little tables. I felt so bad for him! At the time he hadn't done any food challenges so we had no idea the severity of his milk/egg allergies.

Now he sits at the table with the other kids. His teachers have told us that he understands not to touch anyone's food. I also don't worry about it as much now that he can eat baked egg and milk.

Xander originally would just sit at the big table with all the other kids, but recently started grabbing at people's foods. Now he sits at this... I'm not even sure how to describe it. It's essentially a high chair, but it's low to the ground and the tray is the same height as the table everyone else sits at. It essentially just makes it so he's a little further back from the other kids and can't reach their food, but he still sits with them. This is the toddler room, he's age 2.

When he was in the infant room, he would sit at the big table that had built in chairs, but he was always at least one or more seats away from the other kids so he couldn't grab their food. And always a teacher right there in case anyone tried throwing food in his direction.

My DS had an allergy to milk when he was younger and the teacher sat next to him during snacks and lunch - not sure what they would do if there were several kids with allergies

Do they eat at the same table or area as the other kids at daycare/preschool?

The kids with allergies (or restrictions) in LO 2's class sit on individual chairs with booster seats while the rest of the class eats at a large table with little chairs attached. The teachers try to prevent it but the kids grab each other's food all the time!

I am not sure how they handle meals in LO 1's 3s classroom for kids with allergies.
