@rahlyrah: Oh yeah I don't flip her out of concern either (she turns her head or the side when she's on her tummy). But she freaks out, too. I just hate flipping her because I can't comfort her without her wanting to nurse. Then she gets pissed when I don't nurse her. DH is out of town so I have to be the one to do it.

@lawbee11: I should note that I didn't flip him out of concern, I flipped because he freaked. the. eff. out. He knew how to roll belly-to-back during the day but he would wake up in a panic and couldn't figure out how to do it at night. It was really bizarre.

@lawbee11: if she can flip, then I wouldn't worry about it too much! By 5 months her head control is good enough (I'm assuming) that she won't get stuck face down anyway, which is the concern with belly sleeping.

@photojane: She can flip belly to back sometimes. She started flipping belly to back at 2 months and did it all the time for awhile. Then she sorta stopped doing it so much. Now she kicks her legs during tummy time like she's trying to crawl. I also think she just kinda freaks out when she wakes up on her tummy and doesn't really try to flip.

I didn't flip, ever! She just fussed and figured it out. I figured at that age, I didn't really have any concerns

@lawbee11: So, just to clarify... can she not flip belly to back on her own? Sadie flipped back to belly first, and I used a rolled up A+A under each of her armpits to keep her from rolling. Once she learned to flip belly to back (which was like 1.5 later), I took the blankets out and let her do her thang.

@lawbee11: hmm I think I started out flipping him each time but then it became ridiculous so I tried to let him cry for a bit to see if he would settle. Eventually he got more proficient at moving himself around --I thinknhisbissue was that he would try to move to his side but would roll over accidentally. Once e was able to stay on his side he was happier, and then eventually he was comfortable rolling onto his tummy and sleeping that way

@lawbee11: I usually waited a few minutes to see if he would fall back asleep on his own but I usually ended up flipping him. It was a short lived phase though. Once he realized that he liked being on his tummy he began sleeping much better.

I think he started around 6 months. It was after we swaddle weaned. He went thru a period of screaming bc he couldn't roll back; that lasted about 2 wks and then he was a side or tummy sleeper.

My LO became a tummy sleeper around 6 months. At first a he would freak out if we laid her on her back. Then she started rolling to her side as soon as we put her down, and normally she would be on her tummy in the morning. Now she rolls right over when we put her down. She never really got upset if she woke up on her belly though...

Miss A started losing the plot when I put her to sleep on her back so when she was around 6-7 months I started putting her down on her tummy and she was much happier!

LO just turned 5 months the other day. About a week ago he start rolling onto his side to sleep. Then last night he rolled onto his stomach and slept with his butt in the air for most of the night. He went from sleeping 2-3 hours to 7 hours before waking, then sleeping for another 5 hours! It was fantastic. Tonight he rolled onto his tummy and felt asleep after a bit of whining and a lullaby.

During sleep training around 5.5 months. She cried for a bit then figured out that her tummy is where it's at. Sometimes she still sleeps on her back or side but face down is the most common

@lawbee11: that's about the time my LO started sleeping on her tummy. She started sleeping better too. She never really fussed to roll back over but she would wake up to nurse several times a night still.

She's 16.5 months and rolls to her belly as soon as she hits the crib!

How did he/she develop into a tummy sleeper? LO just started rolling back to belly (but only in her crib). Initially she rolled while sleeping then freaked out. Now she rolls over within minutes of me putting her in the crib. She whines, but then will eventually fall asleep. But if she wakes during a sleep cycle transition she cries hysterically cause she can't get back on her back, so I have to go in and flip her.

If this happened to your LO, did he/she eventually become a tummy sleeper? Or did they just learn how to roll back to their back/side and sleep that way? I am wondering if LO wants to be a tummy sleeper because she continues to roll onto her tummy even if I just flipped her back onto her back? Or maybe it's just fun for her til she gets stuck and she actually does hate it.

ETA: She's 5 months old.
