They're somewhere around 7 months, is that right? At that age D was waking up every 2-3 hours all night long and would be up for the day around 6. We did a bunch of things all at once and sleep got much better. For one, we sleep trained to fall asleep at night. In conjunction with that we really started upping the solids. He started sleeping longer stretches pretty much right away.

Once he started sleeping better we instituted a 10 minute rule for MOTN wake ups. At first he started sleeping all the way until 4am. So if he woke up at 1 or 2, I let him cry for the 10 minutes. A lot of the time he'd fall back to sleep around 7 or 8 minutes. Over the last 6 months his wake time has gotten later and later to the point where he generally sleeps 12-13 hours straight no matter when we put him down.

DS is 7.5 months and goes to bed 7/7:30 and wakes between 5:45 and 6:15. We are working on getting him on a 2 nap schedule (though at daycare all bets are off). We have been making an effort to stretch out his awake time and he seems to do really well with it. He will often start to fuss around the 2 hour mark but if we get into some fun and distracting play he will go another hour or so and then go down really easily for a nap. He is usually up 4 hours before bedtime. Since we've been doing this he has been sleeping better at night. We are down from 2-3 night wakings to 1 or none!

LO is 3.5 mo and wakes up 5-6am and usually goes to bed around 6:30pm (+/- 30 min). I've found that sometimes I can co sleep after 6am and get her to sleep until 7am :) Or she'll just lay in her crib and sing to herself for a while. But I agree - once I chsnge her diaper we're up no matter what! I have been known to fall asleep on the floor in her room while she plays in her play gym, oops!

T woke up early for a long time. 4:30 - 5am every day. I finally just accepted it. But miraculously, he went through a sleep regression and a few sicknesses that made his sleep terrible, and when he finally got over it all he start sleeping 7pm - 7am (roughly). Idk what happened but im trying not to think about it too hard.

@twodoghouse: actually, when we were on holiday for two weeks over Christmas, we let LO stay up late almost every night and she started sleeping more like 8:30-9 om to 7 am am, which was awesome!

Butttt typically, she and I leave the house at 6:40, so she needs to be up by 6:15 anyway so now we've moved her bed time back down.

@twodoghouse: I know, lady, I've been in your shoes. The first year is so so hard in terms of sleep. It gets better after they turn one. It wasn't until about 16 months or so when I'd say J STTN even 50% of the time! But S has done so consistently since about 1, so it's only one wake-up and then sleeping until 6 or even 6:30, so much more manageable. You will get there!! Ask me if you have other questions, will try my best to answer based on our experience!

When my son woke up that early I held him off until almost regular nap time. So he was up for a long time but I knew three naps wouldn't work. We typically do 3-4 hours between naps and bedtime. Bedtime around 8.

@Trailmix: I'd be totally fine with 6 am if we could get there! You know I have no idea what I'm doing with regards to sleep! They just get grouchy so I put them down for a nap. Your info about nap training on FB twin page saved my life, btw. I finally nap trained and it took one day. ONE DAY! I should have done it sooner. Today my in laws are coming over which should be a decent time to try less naps and longer awake time. More hands to help if they totally break down!

As others have said, the 2-3-4 schedule helped us get onto two naps, I just modified it if it wouldn't quite work (eg 2.5 hours instead of 2, maybe stretch the 3 hour section closer to 4, etc)

I'm surprised they are still doing 3 naps, I'd drop to two and see if that helps. Mine started doing 2 naps around 6 months and their bedtime is 7:30 (has been since they were around 3 months old). One of mine is still an early riser (hello, 5:45 am this morning) but it has definitely gotten better as he's gotten older. We've gone from 5:00 am to more like 6:00 am.

@twodoghouse: she's been getting up early prob since at least 8 mo or so and I really should have done an earlier bedtime sooner because she was an overtired mess but it took me awhile to figure that out. So now we all go to bed early and get up early

@Anagram: So we might just be out of luck then? Ugh, not what I want to hear, haha!

@gotkimchi: Oh yeah she'll totally do that! You just have to make it to March! Haha. I'm sorry you're in the same boat. I really have a sneaking suspicion that they need to do the super early bedtime, but I just don't want to do it!! We are traveling this weekend so I'll have a little time to decide and try whatever we're going to try next Monday.

@lawbee11: I could try? They are usually super exhausted after 1.5 hrs after wake up, so I might not make it all the way to 9. But maybe we could ease into it by doing 8:15, 8:30, then 9 over a few days?

@BadgerMom: I'd love to get to a 2-3-4 schedule! Unfortunately if we tried that now they'd be ready for bed at 5 pm, which is what I want to avoid. Right now their first two naps are 1 hr 15 min, with the 30-45 min catnap. Dropping that catnap (which I think we all need, actually) would put their last 4 hr stretch still so early in the day because they are awake so early.

Lo is 11 mo and typically gets up around 5 or 530. She was going to bed around 7 but was so cranky during the day that we started putting her to bed around 530. It didn't improve wakeup time but she's getting more sleep overall and is much happier. Happy baby with enough sleep trumps everything for me even though it sucks when I don't get home until 5:15. As far as getting onto 2 naps we've been stretching her awake time after her morning nap from 2 hours to closer to 3 and that gives us better spacing for the day. I decided to just go with this and I'm really hoping after daylight savings in March she'll be sleeping 6:30-6ish which would be perfect! She'll totally do that right???

When we went from 3 to 2 naps we switched to a 2-3-4 wake time formula (or as close to it as we can get). This way LOs bedtime is still the same. If for some reason naps end up being earlier/shorter than ideal and there is no way He can make it to bedtime. We stick him in the car which gets us a short nap so he can make it to bedtime. But this doesn't happen often. He's doing really well with 2-3-4. (LO is 7.5mo)

Could you start their first nap later? I know it's probably difficult now because they wake up so early, but I think if you could get to a point where their first nap is closer to 9 or 9:30 then their second nap could fall around 1:30 and that might put you on a better schedule. 4:30-5 seems really early for bedtime. When LO was their age her bedtime was 6:30 (started routine at 6) and I thought that was early! Good luck...I can't even imagine the sleep issues x 2.

...what time is bedtime? What does your LO's nap schedule look like?

My kids (8 months) are pretty consistently waking up in the 5:15-5:30am range. This wouldn't be terrible if they were sleeping through the night! But usually I am up 2-3 times nursing one or both of them MOTN. Almost always they have pooped when they wake up after 5. In changing them I pretty much lose all hope of putting them back down, especially if they both are awake and crying. I could hypothetically change them and put them back in their cribs to cry, but I'd rather not start the day like that. I won't let them cry when they wake up at 5ish because I know they've usually pooped.

Anyway, I'm resigning myself to early mornings and a strong cup of coffee. I'm wondering when other early risers go to bed though. My LOs routinely fight their 3rd nap, then only sleep for 30-45 minutes. I think they are ready to go to two naps (and hopefully their naps would lengthen this way), but then they would be ready for bed before 5 pm! Right now they go down around 7:45, 11 am and 3 pm for naps. Bath starts at 6:45 pm and they are usually asleep by 7:15. Dropping the 3 pm nap would mean they would wake up around 12:30ish and not go back down until bedtime. I'm thinking that would put bedtime at 4:30-5ish?

DH is really really against that early of a bedtime because he would only get to spend 20-30 min at most with them after work. However, if this has any chance of improving their night wakings or get them past that 5am wake time, I think he would try it.

Anyone have advice or commiseration? I'd love to know how others deal with the early wake ups!
