on weekends (when I do nap) I'm more relaxed, I usually read her queues, unless we have plans then I try to get her to go down when I need her too.

LO is only with me for her one nap per day 3 days per week (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) so if she has having fun and in a good mood I will push it as much as an hour. Her "naptime" is 11:30-12 but she can make it to 1 most of the time. I've found if she stays awake longer, she will sleep longer, so it's win-win. :)

@LovelyPlum: totally! moreover, she's transitioning between 1 and 2 naps (usually 1 at daycare but 2 on home days but sometimes one...), so every day is a little different. it also depends on her wake up time but that varies too because it depends on how many times she wakes at night.

I thought I'd be a schedule kind of parent, but nope, as it turns out, I'm not at all!

We started off with a very strict routine because it was the only thing that worked for him. Now, after almost a year of routine, I can push it back 15 - 20 - 30 minutes depending on his behaviour. We also adjust when we start to see that he's able to stay happy longer.

If your LO needs routine, then I'd put them down no matter what. If your LO is flexible then I'd let them play for a bit longer, but make sure they don't get overly tired where they won't nap at all later.

At daycare, the kids all go down for nap at the same time every day. They're allowed to play quietly in the other part of the room if they don't want to nap, but judging by her daily sheets, DD usually goes to sleep with everyone else (but usually gets up before nap time is technically done). At home, though, we go by her cues so when she starts to get cranky, it's nap time.

@nana87: This is us, too. It is completely counter productive to put her down when she is not ready. There is no more sure fire way of inducing a meltdown.

we don't do set nap times, I follow her lead about whether she's showing tired cues, and daycare does the same. So if she's happy, it isn't naptime yet :silly:

I'll still put him down at the same time. If I miss the window, he won't nap.

Do you let them stay up a bit and push back their nap or do you put them down at the same time every day no matter what?

My LO's should have laid down for a nap 30 minutes ago but they are both playing quietly so I'm going to drag this out as long as I can and hope it doesn't backfire on me!
