@kodybear: gotcha I was thinking you had just switched to cow's milk. Reaction to milk but not yogurt or cheese does sound like lactose intolerance!

@kodybear: I suspected it when she would get really bad runs after WCM. Our dr asked us to wait a few days for the diarrhea to clear up before trying the lactose free milk... It definitely works for LO!

@autumnlove: oh no!! hope she feels better soon! just curious what made you think your LO was lactose intolerant in the beginning? DD gets on and off diarrhea and just seems to be in a worse mood when she drinks alot of milk.

@danda: i'll bring it up the next time she has an appt. sadly shes actually older (2.5yr) and it only occurred to me recently that she might be lactose intolerant. shes had issues since she switched to wcm when she was 1. like the transition was bad, diaper rashes and diarrhea. it slowly got better (after a couple months!) but even now at 2.5 she still gets diarrhea pretty often. i thought she kept getting on and off stomach bugs from daycare but it finally clicked one day that she just might be lactose intolerant (mom fail! :-( ). i dno't think its dairy allergies as she doesn't have any visible reaction to milk or dairy like rashes or anything, just the diarrhea/stomach issues. she also doesn't react to cheese and yogurt. it just seems to be when she drinks alot of milk. i also think shes more susceptible to it since we're asian and i know its more common for us. but i will definitely talk to her ped about it and make sure this is what it is! thanks!

I'm mildly lactose intolerant (no experience with LO). I'd suggest you discuss with your pediatrician as true lactose intolerance is rare in young kids and would also cause problems with breast milk or formula based on cow's milk. It could just be the kiddo needing time to adjust to cow's milk which is more difficult to digest. Or could be a dairy allergy which is a bigger problem. Lactaid works great for true lactose intolerance though so it's a terrific option with all of the nutrition of cow's milk ...it just has an enzyme added that breaks down the lactose before you drink it.

I didn't do any extra testing but we might when she is older. I didn't drink a lot of milk (because I don't like it)when I was nursing her so the issue popped up when I introduced WCM after 12 months. DH & MIL are lactose intolerant as well.

We just give her lactose free milk because she is not into almond, hemp, coconut milks.

I accidentally gave LO some regular ice cream on Sat and she is on day 3 of nasty diarrhea!

did you do any extra testing to confirm it or did you just start limiting lactose? I'm pretty sure DD is lactose intolerant as she's had stomach issues since she switched to wcm. We've cut lactose for a couple days now and she seems happier! Just wondering if i should get more testing done or just assume she is lactose intolerant. Also, if you have any tips for diet or milk alternatives let me know. Shes not a huge fan of almond milk. We're going to try lactaid and see if she likes that. Thanks!
