Our LO is half Taiwanese and half white....since we live in the Greater Los Angeles area, it's pretty diverse and I think she will be fine!

We live in the pacific nw (Vancouver, to be exact) as well and there are many many many half Asian half Caucasian children and adults around. When I used to do specialized tutoring a few years ago at one point more than half my students were bi racial! :)

I think our LOs will be fine :)

LO is half Filipino half Swedish. Surprisingly, there's quite a few half Asian children around here, although still a minority, it's not so uncommon to see. So it's kind of cool to see babies that kind of look like her!

The big difference is that most Asians are from developing countries and as an American, it's not so easy find things in common. So DD will most likely not have play dates with other half Asian kids.

But as for being teased, I'm not too worried about it. Because it's such a homogeneous society, there really isn't enough of other races for it to be a problem. That sounds weird that I say it that way because a lot of places in the States with low diversity usually means a high level of racism, but it's usually not the case here. Plus, there is a surprisingly large amount of adopted kids from Asia that now have their own kids.

I'm hoping that in the next few years, there's really a whole lot of mixing going on and we'd have some real diversity around here.

@sunny: Oh sorry, I meant to respond to @regberadaisy's question when I was at my computer but forgot!

Re: mixed, it's just not really a positive term to me. The term "mixed up" ("In a state of confusion; bewildered or muddled") is a negative one... I guess I never liked the implicit connection between mixed and mixed-up. And yah, I also don't love the whole connection to mixed-breed dogs.

Anyway I'm not super worked up about the word... it's just not for me!

@mrbee: do you find the term offensive or inaccurate or other? Just curious! I was talking to another mom who didn't like the term because it reminded her of dogs.

My LO is half Chinese and half white. She is in good company as we know tons of bi-racial kids around here. We live in the Pacific NW and I suspect bi-racial couples are more common here than in the rest of the country.

Our LO will be mixed....but I don't anticipate much strangeness from other people because she'll probably just look "tan" and people won't be able to place her ethnicity.

People will probably ask her what she "is" as she gets older, but that also doesn't bother me. I think people just ask to be nice/out of curiosity...

I kind of think it'll be a cute sociological experiment to see how her answer changes as she gets older. DH's nephew got really confused one day when he asked if our baby would be "pink". My husband said, "no, she's going to be brown, like us" (meaning like DH and his nephew). And his nephew said, "but Aunt A---- is pink!", clearly perplexed, "so girls can't be brown!"

Dh said, "But you know lots of brown girls".

Then his nephew thought about it for a long time and you could just see a little light bulb go on. And then he was just like, "ohhhhh".

SO adorable!

Our LO will be 1/4 Mexican, 1/4 African American (both DH) & 1/2 white-European mutt (me!) we live (in the UK) in a fairly average neighbourhood so I don't have many concerns, as its fairly certain there will be other kids around of similar background (well, minus the Mexican bit which is definitely less common here! But plenty of Spanish/Italian/east european instead!)

Our friends always joke our family will look like the United Colors of Benetton, which by which mostly they just mean "exotic and beautiful" which is a-ok by me! ;-)

@regberadaisy: I grew up in Virginia...

People don't really tease you for being half Asian? It's more subtle... the full Asians don't always accept you, and you have to find your own identity. Having less Asians around may make it easier.

@mrbee: why do you hate the word "mixed"? What would you define it as instead?

I think it's a lot easier in NYC where there are many more races/ethnicity. But here...for example...I think there was only 2-3 Asians in my husband's graduating class. There are a tons of races/ethnicity because of the state university but they are transient.

We will certainly teach her not to care. But life as a teenager is hard enough already. I just hate that we are potentially giving her more things for people to tease her about.

Our LO is half Indian (me) and a quarter Irish/quarter German (dad). We live right outside Boston which is very diverse so I hope we won't have to worry about L feeling like she doesn't fit in.

asians are still a minority around here at a macro level of the population, but there are many different types of asians near us and a huge korean-am population. we're also hoping to join my home church to keep a tie with the korean-american community around here.

I hate the word "mixed."

In my personal experience, it wasn't that tricky being half Asian in society at large... one note though: Asians can actually be as much (or more) exclusionary as other races. The key is not to care.

do you live in an area where there are families of both ethnicity and/or mixed children as well? I'm Chinese and DH is German/Irish.

We live in a pretty white dominant city and I"m slightly afraid for LO being the only "Asian" or mixed child through her life. Growing up is hard enough without having to stick out. Hopefully they can embrace their awesome uniqueness!
