@yin: It is amazing how they pick things up when you aren't even realizing!

@lemong: Thanks for the book suggestion!

By the way, I put the qualification about daycare/preschool not because I think it's only SAHMs that teach their kids the alphabet! I just am used to people (both IRL and on HB) saying that their kids learned so much at daycare. I know when LO was still going to daycare she learned some animal sounds there that surprised me! I feel a little more pressure doing it "on my own."

LO1 is in daycare, but she learned her uppercase letters from a book - Take Away the A. It's really quite clever and fun even for adults!

My LO learned his alphabet from listening to me read him alphabet books, a few toys and shows on PBS. It really caught me off guard one day when we were playing with an alphabet puzzle and he could say and recognize most of the letters. He was around 2 and his vocabulary was limited. Plus he had never attempted before. It made me realize that even at a young age, our kids are capable of picking up a lot of information.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! LO does know the ABC song and she understands that letters = ABCs but she does not recognize the individual letters yet.

We also LOVE Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, but the same thing... I point to the letters but it hasn't clicked yet. Maybe we need to do it more slowly and have her repeat each one after me. It just seems a little harder to learn so many letters compared to like 8 colors or 6 shapes!

Sounds like Endless Alphabet is a big hit! We tried it a few months ago and she wasn't ready. We'll try it again!

We have alphabet blocks somewhere - I need to find those. Looks like bath foam letters will be on my Target list! :) I also think we have the Letter Factory DVD as a hand-me-down somewhere.

@chopsuey: Ooh, I added that to LO's Christmas list! :)

@travelgirl1: LO is sadly not a huge fan of Sesame Street :/ I wish she was because I know that's how I learned the alphabet!

@Oxana: Thanks for all those great suggestions! I am going to look into those books.

Another vote for the Endless Alphbet (and Endless numbers and readers too) app. I followed up with flash cards and bath time foam letters. DD is 2.5 and knows all of her alphabets and sounds associated with each alphabet. We're working on letter tracing and stronger penmanship skills now.

We got an alphabet Pororo floor mat when she was around 18 months old. She loved having us identify each letter and running over to stand on it. We also had ABC blocks, Baby Einstein board books, magnets, puzzles ... She was really into the alphabet! I think just being surrounded by letters helped her learn them all by the time she turned 2.

Around 18 months both of mine got interested in letters. The Melissa and Doug letter puzzles (any of them!) have been the biggest hits. Letter school and Endless ABC apps are great too. Nothing compares to just saying the ABC's over and over. We do it a lot when just walking around stores or pointing out letters on signs.

@daniellemybelle: in addition to magnet letters, books and puzzles, I got my DD a leap top (linking the newer version). She knew her entire alphabet and the sounds they make before she was 2.5. My son didn't start playing with it until later, but it helped him learn his alphabets and the alphabet song too 😀

Books for sure! She loved Chicka chicka boom boom and the alphaprints books the best, but she also learned to sing the alphabet first by singing the song a lot before she really started learning to recognize the individual letters. She also has the fridge magnet toy.

We have an alphabet quilt that dh's grandmother made for her and she likes pointing to the letters and having me say them, or now she says a lot of them herself. Loves singing the alphabet song so sometimes I try to point to the letters on the quilt or in a book as I sing. And she really like Chikka Chikka Boom Boom lately.
She is 2 and a quarter now and I don't think she knows all of them yet but she knows a bunch and I'm not worried. Like everything else I just try to embrace whatever she's interested in.

Sometime around 18- 20 months, LO learned all the uppercase letters from a combination of that fridge toy, us reading a few alphabet books, and playing with the Melissa & Doug letter puzzle. When she turned , she started learning her lowercase letters from Chicka Chicka boom boom (especially the last page) and an alphabet sticker book.

But she learned higher level numbers from the Endless Numbers app.

I think she learned how to verbally spell her name from the wooden letters I have hanging over her bed. Well, and from me spelling it on her magna doodle. She knows her name, "mama" and "dada".

So I guess overall, just a print rich environment?

We're not there yet, but we plan on doing the Timberdoodle Preschool curriculum at home. They suggest using the Montisorri Letter Work book, which uses phonics:

http://www.amazon.com/Montessori-Letter-Work-Bobby-George/dp/1419704117/

They also suggest reading lots of books that feature the alphabet, like:

G is for Goat
Miss Spider's ABCs
AlphaOops
The Alphabet Tree

And other books you can find at the library. We'll probably also do a Letter of the Week, using some of the activities from here:

http://www.rockabyebutterfly.com/p/letter-of-week.html

My niece started out by learning to spell her name. And my friend's 26 month old is constantly making people sing "the ABC song" with her while she dances maniacally. It's so cute I melt everytime!

We just do the same thing you described with letters. He turned 2 yesterday and he recognizes about 10 or so letters just from us talking about them a lot. I was a pre-k teacher for 5 years, so I guess I kinda use my background, but really, nothing too special! Just lots of conversations about letters we see in everyday life :)

My LO is 18 months and suddenly fascinated with letters. He has been pointing them out to me a lot lately. I just ordered him a Melissa and Doug chunky abc puzzle for Christmas. He also loves puzzles so I think he will like it. We have the leap frog toy and he enjoys putting the letters in and out but doesn't recognize the letters yet. I'm just going to follow his interests for now, nothing structured.
