As soon as she gets up i feed and change her, and try to get out the door as soon as i can. I have a 1.5 hour window, 2 hours if i'm really pushing it and try to get whatever errands i can get done during that time.

if i have to do something past that awake window, i will sacrifice one nap only, either the first or second nap.

I tried to only go out with DD when she was awake so she could be on a good sleep schedule, but it's just not possible, now that I have two. DS is on 2 naps a days, and we're generally out and about during his morning nap. He's either napping in his carseat or in the carrier (or occasionally in the stroller) while I take DD out for some activity. On the days he goes to daycare, he naps in a crib for both naps, but when I have both kids home with me, I don't have that luxury, so he has to nap on the go.

I focus less on nap time than feeding time. I don't like to mess with being out and about when it's time for her to eat. For nap time, if she's tired, she'll fall asleep in the car seat while we're out (and if she's still sleeping when we get home, I just bring her inside and leave her in the car seat until she wakes up). If it's not naptime, she'll just look around at things.

@cvbee: @FriedBabyMama: I feel like everytime I have stayed home to "get him back on track" it completely backfires and he won't nap at all. Like yesterday. Instead of napping he is currently cooing at himself in his swing mirror. Oh boy.

@winniebee: I feel your pain - mine is also almost 4 months and we have the same story - can't stay awake (happily at least) more than 1.5-ish hours, and besides the morning nap, I just press on and let him pass out in the carseat or stroller, even if it means I have to keep walking through his whole nap. I'm hoping it's one of those "this too shall pass" situations... :)

@krsmall: How do you like that attachment? I'm thinking of getting it for our Babyjogger Fit. We have tried that during cranky period in the evening and he resists sleeping more than ever - alas, he now has an earlier bedtime instead.

@winniebee: It's gotten to the point that during his cranky time (between 6 - 7 p.m.) I put him in the running stroller w/ the car seat attachment and go out for a long fast walk/very slow jog. He is out the minute he's in the stroller.

@krsmall: No, I totally prefer to do this and he used to just sleep in the carseat/stroller. Now, it's like his eyes pop open the second we get to our destination and he's wide awakewhen we are in stores. So, he's really not getting in a nap at all when we do errands.

I plan running errands around nap time, his stroller and car seat put him right to sleep. So, I wait till he's awake, fed and played before I put him in his car seat to run errands. I guess I'm a bad mom. :(

@winniebee: I hear you about not wanting to stay home and be a slave to their nap schedule! Story of my life...my 21 month olf functions better on 2 naps a day, it's limiting.

I used to do a few errands on certain days, 2 hours sounds like a good chunk of time, until you break it down, so I feel your pain. We also had to do errands on the weekends, which I hated.

@looch: His max awake time is 1.5-2 hours even at 4 months. Until recently, I've just kind of gone about my day (giving him his morning nap at home) and he would nap in the stroller/car while out and about. The problem is that now he wakes up after the car stops/when we go into a store...so he doesn't get good naps when we are out and about. But, let's be realistic, I can't stay home all day every day nor do I want to.

Do you have a window where you can get stuff done? I remember in the early months, it was really difficult to get errands done because I was so strict about being home for naps. The problem we had with sleeping on the go is I couldn't move him, so if he fell asleep in his stroller, I couldn't get him and the stroller into the apartment, so we'd have to stay out. Same problem with the infant bucket...he'd wake up as soon as the car stopped moving.

My LO used to nap great in the car, and she wouldn't nap in her crib. So I was fine with sitting in the car for an hour playing on my phone parked somewhere. Her naps came before anything else.

Now that she's older and naps in her crib, I try not to let her nap in the car. Now if she's tired and in the car close to nap time, I turn the music up and keep throwing toys at her when I'm at the stop light to try to keep her distracted until we're home.

I only let LO nap in the car if 1) I know we're going somewhere farther away and he will be able to sleep at least 45 minutes (or more in the afternoon) or 2) if for some freak reason he won't nap at home, the car will always do it. But Scenario 2 means I drive aimlessly for a long time, which is bad for the environment and my wallet. So I try not to do that unless I have to.

He is on a pretty set schedule though, so he generally doesn't just fall asleep in the car anymore unless it is actually naptime.

I run all my errands when my LO is awake. If we are driving far and visiting family/friends then we time it so that he can nap in the car but we definitely don't make it a habit (weekends only). His car naps are short (<40 mins) and not very restorative. If he's falling asleep in the car and we are close to home I am a mean mommy and I do everything I can to keep him awake until I can put him down at home!

I have to admit that I don't follow that rule with my six month old. He just carted around when we need to get stuff done and sometimes he takes naps in his car seat. However, with my two and half year old, I do NOT have her in the car near nap time, because even two seconds of sleeping in the car means no nap at home. But, she only has one nap a day so we just do stuff before and after.

I know what book you are talking about, and I tried to follow it as well, but life sometimes gets in the way. I say if you are out and about once or twice a week and he naps a few times in the stroller/car seat that's fine. :)

We try to make sure we're home for at least 1-2 good naps a day. Otherwise, we're doing other stuff. I try to time it so that she can nap in the carrier/carseat/stroller, but sometimes it just doesn't work. Her naps are important, but so is my sanity. We have to leave the house.

Do you wait until naptime to do errands? Or just go during awake time? Same with stroller walks?

I've been trying to "protect" my son's nap schedule as a popular sleep book suggests. But how do I get anything done? He generally naps in the car (catnaps) and then that will throw everything else off for the day.
