We took out one side of the crib rail when she was around 2 because I couldn't lift her into the crib. He likes his bed and I won't change it until around age 3 I think. (He's about 2.5.) I wouldn't have done the toddler bed at all and would have just gone straight to the twin bed, but my mom found one for $15 and it gave us a few months before we had to buy a "real" bed. She did technically climb out, but it was one time around 18 months and she freaked herself out so bad we were never worried about it and it didn't lead to us making the decision to switch her. Shortly before 2, anyway. He never tried to climb out, but his nighttime sleep just got bad (screaming when we put him in the crib, taking forever to fall asleep, waking up constantly). I was ready to try just about anything, and converting his crib to a toddler bed worked like magic. He didn't even really want to then but he couldn't straighten his legs! We haven't decided if we will move c this fall before baby comes or borrow my sisters crib for the new baby.
