@MamaChin: I think she just kind of naturally figured out the pouch. In the beginning we would squeeze it for her and as she got better at eating them, she figured out how to suck.

LO never took a bottle but I didn't try very hard either. It was more of a breast preference for her I think. DH and I drink water with straws all the time so LO picked it right up when we gave her a zoli cup at 6 months. Maybe try modeling drinking out of a clear straw so she can see the water come up. We did BLW so I never actually gave LO pouches when she was starting solids. Someone gave her one at a play date at some point and she had no clue what to do with it. I do give her a pouch occasionally now for a car snack and she does get it but it was a learning curve even when she was over a year! I started by just gently squeezing the pouch with my hands, then once she got some and wanted more, she figured it out.

@lamariniere: how did she figure out the fruit pouch is my question!! My LO doesn't seem to understand that sucking will get more food out.

Just did this with my 10 month old daughter who has never had a bottle. We actually started with an open cup around 6 months and she can drink out of them really well now (if we hold it for her). But I finally got my act together and bought some straw cups. She couldn't figure it out at first, so I had her eat a fruit pouch, then would take it away and give her the straw cup immediately. She figured out the sucking action really quickly while I alternated between the pouch and the cup.

@Mrs. Champagne: I did this and he got sucking a straw right away. This was after months of trying the straw with no success.

But strangely he could suck out of pouch long before a straw. He never would drink out of a bottle.

At five months DD stole a sip of my coke zero. I didn't think she knew how to use a straw...I was very wrong.

Give her time and she'll figure it out.

Put your finger over one end of a straw so some water is in it and drip it into their mouth. I did that over a couple days and ds caught on super fast.

I think around 8 months or so, she just picked it up. For the first little while, we just let her use a straw in our water, and it dribbled out of her mouth. But eventually she picked it right up!

@sslm: she's 7 months, I know it's early and I'm not worried per se. Just want to know how others went about it. She also hates being spoon fed, I thought maybe she'd take to pouches.

Lo picked it up from dh and I, we randomly tried giving her our straw (drink bottle) one day and after a couple of tries she had it sorted. So no advice, but it shouldn't take your lo to master it

How did you get them to use straws? You would think since she nurses she's know how to suck but nope. I just gave her a pouch and she has no idea how to eat. She just rolls it around her mouth. I squeeze some into her mouth and she doesn't try to follow up. She was the same way with bottles. TIA!
