@Honeybee: yes, she has always slept 12-ish so I wasn't expecting an increase. Hope your DD sleeps more soon!

@Andrea: so she was already pretty well doing 12 hours at night, before dropping the nap? DD does about 10, so I thought we'd see an increase.

@Honeybee: Night time sleep didn't increase by much, if anything. But she's out like a light at 6:30 pm until about 6 am.

@Mamaof2: we put her and DS to bed at the same time (7-7:30) but DD usually stays up and reads her books/talks to her animals until 8:30. So she is in bed for a full hour before she usually goes to sleep; she's just not falling asleep any sooner.

@Honeybee: Are you putting her to bed at the same time? When my 2.5 yr old doesn't nap she goes to bed an hour earlier and wakes up at her normal time. If you aren't already I would make bedtime earlier if she doesn't nap.

@looch: @Dandelion: @mrbee: @Andrea: another question: How long did it take before your LO started lengthening his/her nighttime sleep, aftefr dropping the afternoon nap? I thought DD would immediately start sleeping more at night, but it's been a week of no naps and she's still sleeping the same length at night. Should I hold out hope that her nighttime sleep will, eventually, lengthen?

We learned to be careful with movies! I used to use them when desperate, but our son got soooo naughty afterward. So now we only do very short videos...

Great idea on easing into an hour of quiet time!!

@Honeybee: I think I did 10 for a few days. Then 15 for a few and so on. I think we were able to jump from 30 min to 1 hour quickly though. By then she really got into quiet time and didn't notice the time. Oh, and always make sure your LO goes potty before quiet time starts. She would use that as an excuse to leave her room in the beginning!

We started with just 10 min of quiet time and then slowly increased it to one hour. Now she really enjoys her quiet time and stays in her room. I have a box of quiet time toys for her room. Puzzles, paper dolls, painting, etc. I love watching her use her imagination during this hour. :-)

@Dandelion: this is the only alternative I could think of. My only concern is that she still won't sit still through a whole movie. She gets up and runs around, jumps on the couches, etc... maybe if we tried a movie in her room on the Nook she would make it through the whole hour. :) I'll try that tomorrow!

How do you feel about movies? You could put one in and tell her she can watch it, if she stays calm and rests while she watches. I did that a lot with DS when he was giving up naps. He had one of those little fold out couches with disney characters on it, and it was his spot for "rest time" while he watched.

@looch: hmmm, we could try the play room. I just needs her to play quietly because DS still takes a long nap, and I don't want to have to monitor her because I need a break, too. We could try the play room today and see what happens!

Eta: I do try to give her access to toys during her quiet time that DS doesn't get to play with (beads, felt storyboards, her watercolors, etc...). So I do try to make her rest period fun/special.

DD is 3.5 and has officially dropped her afternoon nap. Before this, she had a choice between taking a nap and taking a rest period in her room (quiet play for 1 hour); up until this week she was choosing naps about 75% of the time. Now she won't nap, which is fine, but she also won't stay in her room by herself for a rest period. Spending an entire hour putting her back in her room every 5 minutes is exhausting, and by the time naptime rolls around every day, this momma really needs a break!

What does your child do during his/her former naptime? If s/he takes an independent rest/quiet time, how do you enforce it?
