After night time sleep, DD (6 months) will wake and giggle or coo, presumably because she is happy and well-rested and not too hungry. Overnight wakeups and nap wakeups are nearly always screaming, I assume because she is still groggy and doesn't like that feeling.

@Corduroy: My first daughter dropped her 4am feed when she was 10 months so hopefully that'll come soon for you. As for playing in her crib - I can't remember when it started but it was after her first birthday when she could/would babble and lay/crawl around for a good 30 minutes before wanting to get out.

My LO plays in his crib after a wakeup, usually when I don't get in there right away. Also, we watch him on the monitor to see his sleeping patterns, sometimes, he'll look awake and then will lay back down. When he's serious about being awake, he'll stand up in his crib.

When he doesn't want to sleep, he'll talk to himself for that time until you get him.

@lawbee11: Per usual, our babies are the same.

She's 5 months and has been waking up happy, for the most part, for a while. She's not super quiet, so I can hear her on the monitor, but she often practices her squeals or blowing raspberries for a while before crying. Her room is super dark and she can't have toys in her crib yet, so she's just laying there making sounds. She usually looks towards the sound machine or the video monitor, since both have tiny lights on them.

When she's hungry she wakes up and grunts, whines, then cries, until I feed her, during the night.

My LO also wakes up and plays in her crib at 15 months. She plays with her stuffed bear and lovey. When she's ready to get out (around 20min), she'll start yelling 'up!' She also likes to throw all her lovey and animals out of her crib.

DS is 17 months and plays for a good 30 minutes in his crib. I suspect sometimes longer! It's just his temperament. He has the fisher price aquarium in his crib that he plays with once he learned how to stand in his crib, and we watch him test out all the binkies in his crib (there's always like 5 in there).

My 11.5 mo DD usually wakes up slowly and plays for 10-15 minutes before whining to get out of her crib. If she wakes up crying, it's because something woke her/disturbed her sleep cycle. When she wakes up on her own, she is happy and plays.

My LO is 5 months old and has been waking up happy for about a month and a half. She usually stares at the video monitor and babbles to herself. If she wakes up crying I know she's still tired. This morning she woke up crying at 6:40. I nursed her and put her back down and she fell back to sleep until 8, when she woke up happy. We have blackout shades so even though the sun is up when she wakes it's still usually pretty dark in her room.

I used to feel the same way! M would always wake up quickly and screaming and I didn't understand how it could by any other way. Now at 15 months she wakes up quietly and slowly and will play in her crib with the occasional noise while I spend a few minutes doing something or take a (very) quick shower. I think it's a developmental thing.

My little one will wake up and just calmly lay there and look around until we go get her. Sometimes she will sing to herself or play with her wubbanub. For naps I put board books in the crib with her so when she wakes up she will look at them and keep herself preoccupied. We were on vacation last week and didn't bring the video monitor so it was so hard trying to figure out if she was up from her nap or still sleeping since she rarely cries!

someone told me their young infant would wake up and just play with her hands and look at them instead of squawking like my baby did. i also saw this one baby at daycare who would be lying in her swaddle, having just woken up, peacefully gazing out into the room. i was like "what is that?" because i think i can count the number of times on one hand that my almost 1-year old has woken up happy. the million other times have been crying. daycare says he wakes up other babies from their naps and asked if something was wrong, not knowing that that is our normal.

we have been in 4am wakeup land for longer than i care to admit--okay, it's been about 6 or 7 months. i've tried shortening the 4am feeding and putting him back to bed, but he's usually pretty cranky and gets up again around 5.30 (we aim for a 6 or 6.30 wakeup time which at this point seems more like the holy grail than a realistic goal).

i'm just whining now.

I think its temperament - my DS would scream upon waking but DD will stay there until we get her. She is so quiet we have to continually check the video monitor to see if she is awake! She is almost 3 and has been doing this since 1, so 2 years!

We have a small nightlight in her room but she doesn't have toys in her crib - just blankets and 2 soft dolls.

My LO wakes up screaming so I really don't get the idea that LOs will play in their crib for a while upon waking.

Do your LOs wake after the sun comes up? Are they playing in the dark? We have a nightlight in LO's room but it doesn't provide enough light for her to see toys.

After 10 months I'm trying to be done with the 4am wakeups (that have moved to 3am). I don't think getting LO to play in her crib is a solution but it's something that baffles me.
