My son went straight from balance bike to pedal with no training wheels as well. It was a pretty quick transition. He was already familiar with pedaling from his trike when he was younger though.

@sorrycharlie: A balance bike doesn't have pedals. The kids "run" along with it and yes learn to cruise. They learn to use the handlebars to balance and steer.

Here is him on his balance bike at 2 years old. https://youtu.be/SDVLSYVs96Q

Here is him on his pedal bike for the first time at 3 1/2 years old.

I'm in the camp of no training wheels ever. It just takes them longer to learn. My sister and I learned on normal bikes w/o training wheels back in the day and it didn't take us too long. I'm so glad my mom refused to do training wheels with us. My nephew is like 9 years old and still uses training wheels and is the only kid in his neighborhood that still has them.

@sorrycharlie: Yeah, that's a good question. Mine son has one at 2 and he just walks it. I imagine at some point he will push off and lift up his feet since that would be balancing, right?

I feel like a dope asking.. But what is a balance bike? I mean I have seen them but do they just sorta walk it and push off and cruise? And learn to balance?

My daughter uses a balance bike, and we won't use training wheels. She's 3, and we're planning to buy her a pedal bike in the next few months. I imagine it'll take her a little while, but training wheels just feel like a step back to me.

Straight from balance bike to pedal bike no training wheels here. He got the idea on the first go. Then wanted his balance bike back and now is all about the pedal bike. We bought his pedal bike in January and he turns 4 next week.

There was a small learning curve in pedaling with his heels. He's so tiny that even on most trikes he barely reached and so he pedaled with his toes.

I think we're going to jump straight from a balance bike to a real bike. I figure we don't need training wheels... but may be missing something, so thought I'd check here before we buy a bike without training wheels!
