It was a pretty quick transition. The kids "run" along with it and yes learn to cruise. They learn to use the handlebars to balance and steer. It just takes them longer to learn. My sister and I learned on normal bikes w/o training wheels back in the day and it didn't take us too long. I'm so glad my mom refused to do training wheels with us. Mine son has one at 2 and he just walks it. She's 3, and we're planning to buy her a pedal bike in the next few months. He got the idea on the first go. Then wanted his balance bike back and now is all about the pedal bike. We bought his pedal bike in January and he turns 4 next week. There was a small learning curve in pedaling with his heels. I figure we don't need training wheels... but may be missing something, so thought I'd check here before we buy a bike without training wheels!
