I basically forced a paci on my LO at around 8 weeks because he was such a fussy baby who had a strong need to suck. We started using it for naps only at that time and it helped him fall asleep on his own. We only used it at nighttime to see if he was waking out of hunger at around 10 weeks (but not at initial bedtime). My LO also adored having his paci in the daytime. His face would light up if he saw it so how could I not give it to him (even though I hated him having it all day)?

We did sleep training through the middle of the night waking at 4.5 months and he was still using it for naps. At 8-8.5 months I decided to stop bringing it out of his room so he wouldn't get it during the day. At 9 months we would occasionally forget to give it to him for naps and he slept the same. Now at 11 months he doesn't use it at all. A couple of weeks ago he found an old paci, put it in his mouth, then threw it on the ground. I got him to pick it back up and we went over to the garbage and he threw it in the trash!!

I'm super happy with how things progressed with my little paci addict. I was prepared to let him keep it until he started walking but we managed to wean him off it with no stress!

@T-Mom: haah aw that's kind of sweet that he gets excited about his paci...but yeah, I can see why you would want to get rid of it. My LO doesn't seem to need too much help going to sleep (swaddle, rock for a few min, pop in the paci, and he'll fall asleep) so I don't know if it's worth it to think about weaning if it continues to be that easy for him. I guess we'll see as he gets older.

@hilsy85: Exactly. Just put him down without it one night. He was a great sleeper for me until he was about 4 months old and he had his "regression" and never looked back. When I started reading one idea was to get rid of the paci so I decided to try it and it seems to have helped. I hear its easier to do it before 6 months than after, but I can't remember why....

I wouldn't have had a problem with him using it longer if he hadn't started having sleep issues though.

@hilsy85: We sleep trained at that age because DD was relying on a paci, swaddle, and being walked around (yeah, we really messed up there) to fall asleep and we got fed up. We pretty much did an extinction CIO on her. No props (swaddle, paci), put her down in the crib, and let her cry. It only took three days and the most she ever cried was 30 min.

DS uses it to fall asleep, but if he is really tired, he can sleep without it. When he is sick, we let him have it for limited times during the day, and if he happens to find one lying around, he will get so happy and pop it in his mouth. It is kind of like his best friend. I don't have a huge problem with him using it, but I also don't really recommend it. I think it's better to get rid of it earlier and not depend on it, although it really has saved us in some stressful situations (airplane, etc). We definitely will be getting rid of it soon since it's not allowed in his toddler room where he'll be going in 2 months!

DS uses a paci still for sleeping, and he is 16 months. We did CIO with a paci, and he just learned to keep it in and spits it out when he falls asleep. This is longer than we had planned or prefer, but we are just kind of overwhelmed with other life issues like constant illnesses to deal with this one just yet. Probably in the next 2 months we will remove the paci. i plan to just put him to bed without it, and just expect a few rough nights. With DD, we got rid of it when we sleep trained at 4 or 5 months. This is really the way I would do it again, looking back, but we were much less strict with our second child.

We've used one for a while and she did start to want me to wake up to put it back in for her. We did CIO around 5.5 months though and didn't go in, even if I knew she just wanted the pacifier back. She's now a week over 6 months and she can put it back in herself. Hers falls out when she falls asleep too but when she wakes up, now she can put it back in. I'm not sure yet when we're going to try to wean her off of it, I might ask the pediatrician next time.

Mine takes one sparingly. We CIOed so that got him pretty much off the paci because we didn't do checks so we had no opportunity to replace the paci....now we keep one on hand when we are in public. He chews his hands but he is teething.

@Amelieisme: he's 14 wks old...like I said, he really ONLY uses it to fall asleep, and he is a pretty good sleeper (sleeps 7-3/4, nurses, up around 6, put paci in, sleeps til 7ish). So when you weaned him, you just did bedtime like usual and just lay him down without the paci?

LO uses a paci at night to get herself to sleep. Once she falls asleep, it falls out and she is usually good to go for the rest of the night. She’s 7.5 months and only uses a pacifier when she is falling asleep (naps and night) or if she is extremely crabby during the day (very rare!). I am not worried about the pacifier yet; but we will wean her off of it at some point if she doesn’t wean herself (not sure when that will be though).

I just weaned my LO off of his paci a couple of weeks ago at 5.5 months. How old is your LO? He really loved his paci and always slept and napped with it and really just had it in his mouth most of the time. However, he was starting to sleep poorly (he had previously slept well) with multiple night wakings and I started to wonder if it was his paci falling out that was waking him. I decided to stop cold turkey a couple of weeks ago. The first night he cried for about 10-15 minutes before he fell asleep and the second night he didn't seem to care that it was gone. His night wakings have dropped to 1x/night (most nights...last night was a MAJOR exception). Anyway, I am glad we went ahead and got rid of it, but it really wasn't that hard!

@hilsy85: We introduced the paci around 5 weeks so I was no longer the paci. Mostly he just used it for sleep and in the car to start. Because he is in daycare, they would use it more during the day than we would and it slowly started to progress to him wanting one more often through out the day.

@pelikila: did he start out using it just for sleep and then transition to wanting it all the time? Right now LO only uses it when he's tired, as it helps him relax, and I'd like to keep it that way versus having him use it all the time. @Mrsbells: does she just use it at night/for naps? Or all the time?

DS loved his paci. He was able to find it and put it back in his mouth by himself around 6-7 months old, sometimes he'd need help but not always. We bought pacis that glowed in the dark for night so it helped him see them. He used his paci pretty consistently at home and daycare but when he started "talking" we started telling him he had to take his paci out to talk or we couldn't understand him. He was pretty good about not using it as frequently during the day after that. We took pacis away completely (no weaning, just full removal) at 19 months when we noticed he wasn't really sucking it anymore during the day, just letting it sit in his mouth out of habit. There were a few rough nights but he started sucking on his turtle (his lovey's) feet instead and that was enough to help him soothe but not stay in his mouth. He just isn't a thumb sucker.

@mediagirl: was it an easy transition for you guys, or was there a rough patch before she really got into her thumb?

Seems like it's pretty typical for kids to give up their paci for their thumb!

@hilsy85: our daughter quit her paci when she found it was more a toy than a soother. That happened around 5 months or so. Now she uses her thumb to soothe, though...I'm not sure what the lesser of the two evils is, though.

I am a firm believer that taking her soother away (thumb or paci or whatever she loves) right now would be bad, though. She loves her soother (paci when that was it and thumb now) so much!! It makes her happy, I'm letting her have it.

We use a paci for all sleeping. When she is totally asleep she actually spits it out (girl can get some distance with the paci!). She's also already trying really hard to find her thumb so I think the thumb will replace the paci before it becomes a problem. Honestly I have no issue with it... It helps her and us to get more/better sleep and it has had zero effect on her ability to breastfeed. I plan to be sure it's 100% gone by the time she's one. I might be setting myself up for a battle later to get it away from her but to me it's worth the risk!

Over the last week and a half, we have been using a paci pretty much every time we lay LO down for a nap, and every time we put him to bed at night. It allows us to put him down somewhat awake sometimes, and he can soothe himself to sleep with it.

my concern is that I am creating a monster, and that A) he will never be able to sleep without his paci, and B) we will create a situation where we are running in every 10 min to replace it. Right now, it falls out after he falls asleep and he doesn't wake up. But will that change? What was your Lo's paci use like? When/how did they give it up? Did you have to do training to wean them from the paci? I definitely don't want to take it away now because it really helps his sleep, but I guess I just want to prepare myself!
