I haven't read through all the responses, but I don't know what that child's BMI is. That may have been a factor in the discussion.

Also kids with over nutrition do frequently grow taller initially with big height and weight, but linear growth slows down and weight gain persists. I think that's why it's important for the pediatrician to assess each child individually and not just go by percentiles. :)

It seems odd that the doctor would tell your friend to change diet. Is this when they start tracking BMI? Maybe according to that the kid could be overweight?

If a kid is in the 95th for height, it makes sense he would be in the 95th for weight, too.

I would only be concerned if it was 95th for weight and 50th or lower for height.

I would only be concerned if they weren't proportional (i.e. <60% height, but over 90th for weight) or if the weight suddenly jumped up off the typical curve. DS has always been about 80% for height, but at his last appointment his weight had gone from 63% at his 9m visit to 85% at 12m. The ped wasn't concerned, she asked about what types of food he eats and said it was fine. She did make sure that we're not feeding him a ton of juice and I asked if we were giving too much WCM (turns out we're not).

Given my family's propensity for obesity I'll probably always keep an eye on his weight and the types of food we're feeding him.

Nope, totally not concerned. Both my boys are big. My 2 year old was 98% for weight and dropped to around 70% for height. He used to be 90%+ for both. All kids are built differently. He wasn't and isn't fat. He's solid. Now little brother is chubby! He's almost 7 months, around 24 pounds and fitting in 12-18 month clothes. Doctor has never mentioned any concern.

If the child eats well, then I don't see the problem. I'd be more worried if he was too big because he ate junk all the time!

J is 95% for both, and I'm not worried. Someone has to be at either end of the spectrum! I think genetics also play a role in whether it's unusual for a kid to be big - I'm small, but my husband is a big guy, and both my brothers are big too, so it's not surprising. I've never had a doctor express concern - that's weird to me!

Not at all, unless the child's diet is just awful or something along those lines. My little brother was always 99% in weight and once he hit age 13, he shot straight up to 6'2" and lost every bit of "puppy fat" on him. I don't like the trend lately of focusing on kid's weight until after puberty. As long as they are active and eating well, I think all of it is needed for coming growth spurts!

I couldn't change his diet if I tried, and in fact, I'd actually love for him to eat MORE.

LMW was above 95% for both height and weight for a long time! I've always been told that as long as they follow their growth curves we shouldn't be concerned. She's always followed her curve... she's always been high percentiles since she was born.

@bpcmarj: color me surprised that Wagon Sr. and I produced a kid similarly sized as yours... I think we are both a head shorter than you and your DH!! ;)

Wagon Jr. fell off his height curve so we went in for monthly height checks. His weight curve has been slowing down, but gradually, so our ped isn't concerned.

I wouldn't be concerned about height because that's not something I can control. I know with babies generally the mentality is "the bigger the better." I worry about my LO's weight and she's 35th% (that she's too small)! But I assume once they reach a certain age it does become concerning to be at the top, I just have no idea what age that is since we're not there yet...

I'd be relieved! My kids were born small (at 38 weeks, so not early) and it took DS 4 months to even make it on to the charts for weight. At 6 months DD was around 40% and DS was around 25% and that was so amazing to hear! Having underweight kids was sooo stressful in the first few months. I'd love to not have to panic over every ounce they're getting and enjoy big kiddos!

That sounds crazy, unless the doctor somehow knows the kids are eating a poor diet. My son was 97th% for weight and literally off the chart for height at his 2 year appt and the doctor didn't have a single concern. I specifically asked her if we should be concerned about obesity, and she said "No, I wish all my patients could be half this healthy." I'm not even sure how I could change his diet because he already eats really healthy. The doctor's only concern was making sure people don't expect him to act like a 4 year old just because he looks like one.

I wouldn't be concerned at all! That pediatrician' advice seems odd to me unless he/she has reason to believe the child's diet is full of garbage and whatnot. I have seen some children who are in the higher percentiles for weight who are eating nothing but sugar and processed foods and that would concern me.

But if a child is eating healthy real food and is in the upper percentiles, I wouldn't be concerned and would just assume that they will grow up to be a good sized adult!

Although, my second son is in the 90s for both and the new Ped thinks I may be over feeding him.

My twins have been in the 90s for height and weight since a few months old and my Ped always said, whatever you are doing, keep doing it.
