@wonderstruck: I'm so sorry you're getting this diagnosis. We've been told by two doctors that LO has low muscle tone so that's been added into the search we're already doing for syndromes. No advice here on walking but I'm really hoping for you that EI can address it effectively.

My son was diagnosed with low muscle tone around 4 months. I was totally blindsided too, it seemed that everything was perfect! There's no syndrome either, just the low tone.

He started EI therapy for gross motor skills at 5 months and was crawling by 10 months and walking by 11. Physically, you'd never know he had delays now. He is still not taking well, which seems to be connected, but he has finally started working on that so I'm trying not to stress.

For DS the problem seemed to be as much a lack of motivation as the actual low tone. I guess the low tone was making him reluctant to get moving, and so he was slow to gain strength, and it was a vicious cycle. The biggest thing therapy did for him was that he started really trying :)

For standing, he did exercises bouncing on an exercise ball, and I think being stood up while leaning against someone. We'd also put stuff he really wants on the couch so he'd pull up on it. And trying to "dance" with him to music. He definitely tried harder if there was music.

@Mrs Green Grass: He doesn't have any kind of syndrome causing the low muscle tone, which from what she said is a good sign since that's more likely to mean its pretty mild. They do exercises with him, but he's pretty stubborn/cautious and is very good at finding ways around what they want him to do! Although at least now I know there's a reason for the cautious-ness, he doesn't feel as secure standing because he isn't die to the low muscle tone.

Check out my late walker thread. My LO did stand independently, but refused to practice walking. He walked at 18 1/2 months.

Do they think there is an underlying cause for low tone? Do they work on walking?

olive crawled at 12 months and walked at 18 months. she was delayed in gross motor skills compared to other kids. but it didn't matter that much once she was walking and you didn't really notice any delays. now she's almost 3 and no one would think she is delayed (though she definitely runs slower than everyone else).

walking at 18 months is actually still within the range of normal, so i told myself i'd worry at 19 months if she wasn't walking. and it was like overnight once it happened so you never know!

When did they learn to walk? Were they delayed in other motor skills too? If they're older now, how has it affected them long-term?

L has been receiving EI services for about 4 months now, but was just diagnosed yesterday with this. I'm still reeling a bit - I hate that it's not something I can fix. I hate being told that there's something wrong with him when he seems so perfect to me. I'm glad to have some answers on why he has been delayed in his gross motor skills, but selfishly I'm still frustrated that soon I'll be carrying all 27 pounds of him plus an infant around everywhere.

I'm just hoping to hear from others to have some realistic expectations around this. He learned to crawl at nearly 12 months, pulled to stand at 14 months, and now at 16 months that is still where we're at - he doesn't stand independently and hates when you try to help him walk. Also open to suggestions on exercises/activities to do with him!
