LO is EBF with bottles of pumped milk while I am at work. My pediatrician said to start right away at the four month appointment to prevent food allergies, and to start with purees, but not rice cereal. I don't feel comfortable starting yet. I am nervous about starting solids, and there seems to be so much conflicting information. The AAP council on breastfeeding says to start after 6 months, but the AAP council on feeding says to start at 4-6 months. The American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (AAAAI) recommends starting high allergy foods in the 4-6 month window, starting after a few low allergy foods are well tolerated. The WHO recommends waiting until at least six months, but at least some of that is based on concerns in developing countries. I am thinking of starting with bananas, apples, and sweet potatoes starting at five to five and a half months, and then proceeding to high allergy foods, so we can get some or most of them in before six months. I am so confused and stressed about starting solids.

Our pediatrician said we could start giving DS rice cereal at 4 months, but would prefer if we held off until 5 months since he's a lil small/young for his age. I'm excited to start, but he doesn't really show signs of interest yet. I'm going to try and feed him some cereal this weekend and see how he does. I'd eventually love to to do BLW, if possible!

DS was breastfed (though I work full time out of the house, so he had bottles of breastmilk most of the daylight hours from 7 weeks on), ped said we could start at 4.5 months. I didn't introduce solids until DS told me he wanted to, by banging his fists, smacking his lips and screaming for what I was about to eat. He was 5.5 months old.

At our 4 month checkup this week the doc said we should start at 6 months so that's what I'll do. I want to start with real food and not cereal, but we shall see! She is EBF.

DS was EBF and we started solids at 5 months. He showed signs of readiness- he could sit and would reach for food, but we mostly started then because WE were excited to try it out. I will wait much longer for LO#2 to start solids (maybe 8 or 9 months? Once they have a good pincer grasp...). It was a lot of hassle and not as much fun as I had thought (we did BLW and cloth diapering- it was messy on both ends!).

Our ped recommended starting just after 4 mos because he was showing all the signs of being ready. We started him just over 4 months and he loooooved food right from the start. We didn't give him any cereal though, went straight to avocado, sweet potato and banana. LO was EBF and just weaned this week at 16 mos!

One ped told us 6 months, our current ped was okay with cereals younger. I was not in any rush and timidly started a little after 6 months. But we didn't get serious about offering her more solids until about 7.5 months (and even now at 9.5 months), it's a lot of work for me to feed her 2-3 meals.

LO is a little over 4 months and at her 4 month check up the ped said to wait until 6 months. He said that is the new recommendation, but things change all the time. My friend's ped had her start a little after 4 months. Both of our babies are EBF.

LO is 4 months now, EBF, and we just started rice cereal. She is about a lb less than the doctor would have liked, so he suggested adding a feeding of cereal. She shows nearly all of the readiness signs, there is no family history of allergies, and she gobbles up the cereal like it's the greatest thing ever. So yes, it totally depends on your kid and your preferences.

We started at about 6 months.

I was told that your baby shoes they are ready for solids after they lose the tongue thrust (basically pushing anything you put in their mouth with their tongue.)

Most of your baby's nutrition will come from breast milk/formula for the first year, so foods are really about exploring new textures and tastes.

It really has more to do with developmental readiness than age. Is the baby able to sit up and hold their head up well, decreased tongue thrust reflex (so they don't automatically just push everything out of their mouths), interest in opening their mouths for foods or a spoon, etc.

My first tried mashed banana and avocado at 5 1/2 months but my second child really wasn't ready until 7 months, both were EBF.

C was EBF and we started him on rice cereal with apples (earth's best brand) hydrated with breastmilk a little after 5 months. I wanted him to have a bit of practice so it was intermittent rather than trying to get a "meal" in him at home and I knew daycare was starting to ask when I planned to start solids so I thought they'd let me drag that out for awhile, which they did.

At six months (one week prior actually). We had intended to wait at least six months no matter what, but that was also when he showed all signs of readiness.
We do BLW and it's still a slow process at 8 months. He's had maybe 20 foods? No set meal times yet, it's just when we have time.
