We do Tempt original hemp, because she still can't drink cow's milk without reacting.

We switched to hemp milk at 12-13 months, as I pump weaned. We actually still do half Pacific Naturals and half Tempt, and half sweetened vanilla and half unsweetened....haha, because I was also dairy free and I tasted them all and decided that was the best mix for my own personal taste.

@Mae: I did it until she was 2 because she wasn't the best eater. I told my doctor and she preferred a milk alternative to formula, but seemed ok with it when I told her that DD wouldn't drink any of the other milks. By 2, she was eating a lot better and could also tolerate dairy so I stopped the formula. She still doesn't like WCM at 2.5, but she will eat yogurt and cheese. So I would try to transition to a milk alternative first, but I think (hope) formula is ok as a back up. If your LO eats very well, she's probably getting all the nutrition she needs anyway.

And yes, it's amazing that they will drink (and love) something so smelly!

LO1 drinks almond milk, and LO2 drinks hemp (he is allergic to tree nuts too). We buy Pacific Natural Food hemp milk, which can be found at Whole Foods and other natural food stores. I buy it through Vitacost.com since it's cheaper and more convenient. Neither of them have had cow's milk to know what they're missing out on, and the transition wasn't too difficult.

My LO needed formula supplementation. I chose dairy formula (soy made me uncomfortable), but we quickly discovered a milk intolerance (bloody/black/hard stools). We switched to soy, so at 12 months, I was really ready to move away from formula.

Our MD recommended that we do food for nutrition and water for hydration. There is no need for milk when your babe is eating a wide variety of good, fatty foods.

We do offer plant based milks every now and then, but usually just reserve them for cooking purposes.

My favorite fatty foods are: anything coconut, avocados, nuts, cashew cream, and olives.

@Andrea: how long did you keep her on the nutramigen? And do you know... is there any health reason they need to get off of it at some point? Or is it just because its so expensive? (also seriously? so gross. it smells like self tanner lol.)

@Adira: I mean, she is fine with her straw cups for water. But when I tried putting her formula in it she just sucked it up, then spit it out like.... what the hell are you doing to me woman?! thats sort of why I was hoping that by giving her a totally new drink in her straw cup she'd just be cool with it. But who knows. Nothing about feeding this kid has been easy so why would I think this would be? :)

@Mae: haha, good luck! We transitioned to sippy cups (straw technically) first and then switched to hemp milk. The switch from bottles was ripping the band-aid off. I replaced one bottle each week with a cup. He wasn't a fan. And then I did a slow mix of hemp milk with BM until he was fully on 100% hemp milk. By the time he was fully switched to hemp milk, he was used to the new cups too.

@skipra: not going to lie, formula is so easy lol. Also I don't totally understand why it matters if she is on it past a year. Unless its just a cost thing? Which, at $40/can the cost does blow. But we're used to it and she's happy and I just really hoped she'd be over the dairy issues by now :(

@Mae: well sometimes I am totally over the nursing and am tempted to switch to formula but I don't want to deal with 2 transitions and $$$$! It's been almost 3 years since I haven't had a kid on my boob. I'm kind of done and envious of formula feeders! Grass is always greener and all...

@Adira: yea i am not looking forward to the transition at all. LO is also still on bottles because she won't drink formula out of her straw cup. I figured I'd tackle both bottle weaning and formula weaning at the same time hoping to just rip the bandaid off all at once.... wish me luck hah

@Mamaof2: she can't have soy either so not even an option for us! Good to know though. My LO does not like meat much so we struggle with protein a lot, but she does love veggies and I've been cooking them all in olive oil so she at least gets some good fat and calories that way.

@Mae: The allergist was and wanted him on soy - but I had heard things about the hormones in soy and didn't want to use it.

He loved meats so I figured he got plenty of protein there and I used olive oil on lots of stuff for healthy fats and calories. He did great.

Also coconut milk yogurt and ice cream were yummy

@Mae: I find it in my regular grocery store. It's often in the coffee aisle with the non-dairy creamers. I've also found it in the "Natural/Organic" section at other stores. We buy the Tempt brand. Xander drinks it just fine! He obviously doesn't know the difference since he's never had WCM. The transition was a bit rough (as in he didn't drink much for a couple weeks), but I've heard that's normal for any switch. I've tried it and don't think it tastes bad at all, but I also LOVE cow's milk, so it doesn't taste as good to me.

@Mamaof2: Were you at all concerned with the low calories/protein of coconut milk? It has like, 1g of protein v. 8 in WCM and half the calories.

@Adira: where did you find it?! Also did your LO drink it okay? I've heard it tastes pretty bad.

@skipra: I wish nursing was an option! That would def be easiest. I feel bad leaving her on formula for now but like... it's easy. lol

We switched to coconut and hemp (we would have done almond too but she was also off nuts at that point). Although it turned out the my LO doesn't really like any milk if it's not in a bottle so after she outgrew the MSPI (around 14 months), we ditched the bottles and the milk and just started giving her lots of cheese and yogurt.

Both my guys were not ready for wcm at 1. With W, the doctor recommended trying soy milk. He was OK with it when I gave it to him but I wasn't comfortable with it so we just continued breastfeeding. G is also not ready. Is just starting to tolerate dairy in my diet but reacts to eating it directly. The ped said we could give almond milk which I have in cereal but we are still primarily breastfeeding. We will try just before his 15 month appointment and see how it goes.

We went to hemp milk at age 1. It's the closest in nutrition to whole cow's milk (as far as I could tell). We were breastfeeding prior to that and I was ready to be done pumping, so we had to switch to something.

how did you handle the formula transition? We haven't thought too much about it because we were hoping LO had grown out of her intolerance, but it is looking like she has not (yet... i hope she will soon!). She's 13 mo and we still just give her nutramigen like we always have. We haven't talked to her doctor about it because at 12 mo we were planning to do dairy trials and then hopefully move to WCM. She didn't seem that concerned about her staying on nutramigen for now though so I may not make any real decision until after LO's 15 mo appointment.

Anyways, what did you do?
