I'm more worried about the social aspect. We have an August 31st cutoff and her birthday is at the end of August. She's still years away from kindergarten, so it's hard to say how I'll feel then.

Im more worried about the social aspect than the academic. Physically, she's a big kid so she fits in.

Going into Kinder, she hasn't been very excited about reading just yet. We aren't pushing her. She loves to learn new things and thats what matters right now.

DD1 has a June birthday, so she will be in the middle of the pack age-wise as she goes into public pre-k. At private school, she basically the youngest in her class (I think 1-2 girls were the same week/a week after her) of kids who were 3 & 4 turning 4 & 5. So at the beginning of the year, she was about 3 years/3 months and some of her classmates were about to turn 5! Most were at least already 4.

It was a little disheartening at times to see that she didn't really interact as much as the bigger kids did, and to see kids writing whole words/sentences when she couldn't even identify letters....but do you know what? The past few weeks, about a month after turning 4, she chose to reveal to me that she herself can now write entire words/phrases, especially if I help her by saying the letters. So I think that being with the big kids actually quietly pushed her to learn more/try things that she might not have felt motivated to do surrounded by younger children.

LO just started at a Montessori preschool and her classroom is typical Montessori primary mixed age, 3-6 (though I think the oldest is actually 5). She's 2 years 10 months so she is definitely on the young end. I'm not too worried because she is pretty advanced for her age, and part of a mixed age class is so the younger kids can learn from the older kids. She can learn at her own pace.

@oliviaoblivia: DS is the oldest and he has done wonderful! After the first few weeks they moved him into the advanced reading and math groups so he was never bored - they constantly challenged him - hopefully your school will do the same!

@Bao: yeah. She's pretty smart and was bored towards the end of her preschool year. They moved her up to the fours classroom and she's really thriving. Unfortunately all those kids will be in school this year and she'll have to wait until next year.

Not really. I am a Nov baby so pretty young too.

It will be interesting to watch them grow as my next baby will be the oldest of her class (if she doesn't come early)

My son isn't the youngest, but my main concern was not academics, it was and still is emotional and social maturity.

@Bao: my daughter will be the youngest in her class as her birthday is the cutoff day. I am not really worried about it yet. I honestly think age has little to do with it.she is very good at following directions in a school setting and I think that is key.

Do you worry about them keeping up, academically?

I'm not worried about it right now, because academically she was on track in preschool (they do testing twice a year), but I'm not sure if that will change as she gets older and the work gets harder. I guess we will see!
