After 6 is reasonable enough to wake up for the day, although their usual wake up time is 7. If the kids wake up before 6, we usually end up sleeping in their room to help them fall back asleep. It usually works.

oooooh that sounds like torture...

DD1 always hates to sleep. Now she's learned that she can get up whenever she wants as long as she plays quietly in her room. Unfortunately, it makes her SO cranky the rest of the day.

For DD, when she was younger, yes. As she got older, it seems that once she's up, she's up.

I can usually tell; if she wakes up cranky/crying that means she still needs to sleep. If she wakes up happy and talking right away then she's done sleeping!

This happened today. R tried to get up for the day at 4:30. He was wide awake, didn't want to eat or nurse....didn't want to be rocked....I let him fuss a while and then ultimately did rock him back to sleep at 5:30....and he was up again at 6:30 :meh:

Did they go back to sleep?!?

LO 3 woke up around 4:15. I brought her to our bed and nursed her for a couple minutes. She wasn't very hungry and had no interest in sleeping so I took her to the living room. She played in her jumper and rolled around until she fell asleep at 5:45.
