My coworkers and bosses are super understanding. They also recognize that DH has an inflexible sick/time off policy for his company so more of it does fall to my shoulders.

When I came back from mat leave last year in April, I didn't have any PTO left for the year since I took it all with mat leave. They totally worked with me for the rest of the year as I juggled the twins when they would get sick and let me make up time as needed so it didn't cut into my paycheck.

 them.

My husband technically has unlimited sick days, but obviously he still has to get his work done on time, so it's still hard for him to take a sick day (he does it when he really needs to for LO, though).

People are somewhat understanding at my work. Most have kids so they get it, but we have a set amount of "personal" days and we're only supposed to take "personal" time for LO sickness--we're not allowed to use our own sick days. So even if I have 15 sick days, I'm not supposed to use them for my infant who is in daycare and has no immune system. So....not cool.

@Corduroy: good point. I am "over it" because i feel its not a level playing field. My boss gives me the worst time about any sort of time off, but you mention a kid and its a free pass.

@oliviaoblivia: That stinks. It's not like you're wanting your child to be sick — it's not a vacation day — and as if it's not stressful enough! (Although, I did just come back from getting a coffee at Starbucks with S) :) BUT, I will be working this evening to make up some work I'm not doing today.

My supervisor has a baby a few months younger than mine so he always wants me to stay home and keep my germs to myself. I think some of my childless co-workers are kind of over the sick days thing. Recently a few started taking sick days for their dogs. I'm thrilled about it if it makes everyone feel like there is a level playing field.

They're understanding, but I also have my parents who are kind of our back up care if G is sick.

We do not have unlimited sick days, we have 5 instances of 3 days without a doctors note and 8 days family care leave....actually that is the policy for the company I work for. Since I am a contractor, I don't get paid for any time off, sick days or vacation days.

My boss doesn't have kids...she's 50 and not married, but she's incredibly understanding when S is sick. I think she absolutely wants a husband and kids, but it just never happened for her. So I think she's sympathetic when the wee one is sick.

I also work with a lot of younger people who have kids around LO's age, so we're all completely understanding of each other!

My boss and less than lovely coworker understand as we all have families. My LO is the youngest of the bunch with my boss' youngest child just finishing college. My boss is awesome about it. I give him heads up about appointments. If I have to miss, I will work from home or work different hours to accommodate my LO being sick.

@hotchildinthecity, Unlimited, interesting!!!! There was a question posed to a career development board at work regarding unlimited vacation. The vast consensus was that some would abuse it, but the majority wouldn't.

She was super cool about it when I called but after the fact she was all- "you need to make up that time" " no you cant take vacation, you just had a day off" and crap like that. EVEN though I said to use my vacation time for that day off!!

@Adira: It was unlimited, if you were sick you stayed home. In four years I had used two sick days. Within a month of returning to work I took four days - LO had it coming out of both ends there's no way I was going to work!
Now we have six days per year. I've already used 4.5. Fanf*ckingtastic. No idea what she's going to do when she figures out I'm pregnant again.

We have a running joke among us childless people at work where we say "i have a kid thing!!" When we want to leave early or take a day off. People at my office definitely take advantage of our unlimited sick days policy and the fact that no one is going to tell you to stay if you say you have to leave early for your kid. There are definitely those that have legitimate excuses but there are definitely some that are full of it ;)
