When I was about 12 or so she started working part-time at our church as the coordinator of educational programs. She was still able to pick us up and drop us off at school which was great. She eventually developed this job into a second career and is now very well respected in the field and does work on a national level. Then she went back to work teaching part time and still does that. While I was in high school, she took an unpaid position that was basically a full-time job, and then she took a paid position the year after I graduated high school. She's still a SAHW. When they got married, my dad told my mom she never had to work again so she hasn't. I do have a younger brother who is 13 though so she’s more of a SAHM for him now. She does teach CPR and First Aid classes but she does them out of her home and only does 1-3 classes per month. Once my brother moves out I’m pretty sure that she’ll continue the way that she is. She does do a lot of volunteer work for their church, school and Boy Scout troop. But during that time, we had foster babies, and she volunteered at my school and church multiple days each week. Once I hit jr high, she went back to work 1/2-ish days so she could take me to school and be home about the same time I was, and by high school she was full time. I think I'll probably do something similar, but probably start working part time in my chosen field when the kids are in elementary school. She had part-time jobs when we were elementary school, but we essentially didn't notice. She's a teacher and went from SAHM, to preschool, to elementary ed. At one point she would have had four young girls (1, 4, 5, 9), so working full time just wasn't a good option until we got into the school system. However, she had mental problems that eventually forced her to go on disability. So, she was a "SAHM" since I was 5 and she never returned to work. When we entered elementary school, she started volunteering at the school, but would get out when we were done. At some point, she started working part-time on the weekends (or maybe she always worked on the weekends... I can't remember). And eventually she transitioned to working part-time during the week when we were old enough to look after ourselves (12/13ish maybe). And then when my dad got laid off when my brother entered college, she started working full time and has ever since. She wants to retire in the next couple of years, and I would love to help make that happen! Several of you mentioned having SAHM's or moms that worked part-time. Did they eventually go back to work full-time? If so, when?
